Mr. Fei Yiwu's wife, at four months of pregnancy, suffered from insomnia at night, painful and dribbling urination (Lin syndrome), with phlegm, cough, and internal heat. The pulse was slippery at the right Guan position, weak and thready at the left Cun position, and rapid in both hands. She was prescribed Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Pian Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Zi Su Geng (Pericarpium Perillae), and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), decocted in water and taken orally. She slept peacefully that very night. The following day, she was treated with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Chenpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zi Su Geng (Pericarpium Perillae), and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) for regulation until full term, when she delivered a healthy son.
The younger sister-in-law of Mr. Fei, named Liu Niangzi, experienced generalized body pain, fever, profuse sweating, drowsiness resembling drunkenness, and inability to rise from bed. The pulse was short and weak at both Cun positions, and rapid without strength in both hands. This was due to exhaustion from overwork, causing excessive loss of sweat. Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 3 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 4 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1.5 qian, Guipi (Cinnamomi Cortex) 8 fen, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 qian, and Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) 2 qian were prescribed. After one dose, the fever subsided, and pain and sweating ceased. However, she remained fatigued and unable to rise. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Chenpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae) were added to the previous formula. After two doses, she recovered completely.
Another patient, Ba Niangzi, presented with headache, cough, copious sputum containing blood, nocturnal fever, and a bloody taste in the throat. Two days prior to each menstrual period, she invariably experienced abdominal pain. Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma) were used. After eight doses, the illness was cured.
The wife of Elder Mr. Yao Banshan had been unable to bear weight on her left foot since October of the previous year. In December, after childbirth, she improved for three days but then became immobile again, suffering from frequent chest and hypochondriac pain. She habitually suffered from phlegm-fire, yet her previous physicians primarily prescribed Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), occasionally administering Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction). After nearly a year of treatment, her condition remained unchanged. Upon my examination, the pulses at both Cun positions were surging, slippery, and rapid, accompanied by nocturnal fever. This indicated stagnation of damp-phlegm, caused by excessive tonification and astringency in previous treatments, leading to a lingering course. Therefore, Erchen Tang (Two Aged Ingredients Decoction) was prescribed with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Weilingxian (Clematidis Radix), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). After two doses, chest and hypochondriac pain stopped, and fever subsided. Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) was then added. After eight doses, she was able to walk.
