[Preface]
The medical classics attributed to Qibo and the Yellow Emperor are numerous (numerous as to fill ox-carts and heap up against walls), and gynecological syndromes and treatments are particularly complex. However, various medical texts are either broad but not refined, or concise but incomplete. Without a clear understanding of pulse pathology and broad insight, one remains at a loss, leading to the spread of misinformation or doubt; having such books is worse than having none. Although there are renowned experts in fetal and obstetric medicine, one must invite a physician to ascertain the source of the disease and determine the nature of medicines only upon facing the symptoms. Moreover, inaccurate transmission of knowledge can lead to detrimental errors, which is alarming. Fetal and obstetric matters are common household events; how can one find good physicians in remote and desolate areas? And in the panic of the night, when medicines are urgently needed within moments, it is indeed lamentable! Pitying the hardships of the world and disregarding my own clumsiness, I have compiled this volume. The upper volume collects the hidden essentials of past masters, presenting them in their entirety, mostly discussing menstrual regulation and conception, as well as prenatal and perinatal theories, making the syndromes, treatments, and formulas clear at a glance. The middle volume exclusively focuses on Shenghua Decoction (Postpartum Revitalizing Decoction) as the main formula, adjusting for symptoms, and detailing postpartum care without omission. The lower volume categorizes Ye Tianshi’s methods for menstrual regulation and conception, Yin-Yang Immortal Date for immediate fetal nourishment, and Mr. Ni Hanchu’s eternally effective prescriptions for dysentery and malaria, publishing them all for the public. The title is "Ningkun Secret Manual" (Secret Recipes for Women's Health), with the subtitle "Proven Good Prescriptions." If every household possesses this book, observes the changes of Yin and Yang, and applies treatments for fetal foundation before conception and appropriate care after delivery, not only will secret gynecological arts be preserved rather than lost, avoiding detrimental errors, but almost all worries can be alleviated. How great is the difference compared to those books that are broad but unrefined or concise but incomplete! As for the experienced prescriptions in the final volume, many remain treasured; here we present only fragments of precious light, awaiting subsequent printing so that everyone may see the whole picture.
Inscribed by Li Tang, styled Yuetian from Yexi, during the mid-autumn of the leap month in the first lunar month of the Bingwu year of the Qianlong reign.
1. Pre-Menstrual Phase
Discussion of symptoms: Menstrual blood resembles bile water, heat sensation in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), lower back pain, accompanied by lower abdominal pain, yellowish complexion, and loss of appetite. This indicates deficiency of Qi and Blood. First, clear the heat, then regulate menstruation. Recovery occurs in the following month when blood becomes abundant. Initially treat with Huangqin San (Scutellaria Powder).
Huangqin San Formula 1
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (6 fen), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (8 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (5 fen), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (5 fen).

4. Heat Fever due to Blood Deficiency during Menstruation
Discussion of symptoms: Due to women's irritable temperament or sexual intercourse during menstruation causing injury, a lump the size of an egg forms in the hypochondrium on either side. Menstruation stops, transforming into heat in the five centers, headache, dim vision, cough with phlegm. If untreated for half a year to a year, emaciation and diarrhea make it difficult to treat. First stop the heat using Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder).

5. Amenorrhea with Heat Fever
Discussion of symptoms: During menstruation and postpartum, consumption of raw/cold foods and fruits causes blood stagnation due to contact with water. Initially, chills and fever occur for one to two months, irritability in the five centers; when Spleen Earth prevails, menstrual flow naturally resumes. If untreated for half a year, it transforms into bone-steaming fever (Yin deficiency heat). Facial heat at Zi and Wu hours, muscle emaciation, continuous diarrhea require urgent treatment. If severe, urgently use 3 li of Opium dissolved in Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) to save lives from death. Use Xiaoyao San and Ziwan Tang (see Formula 4).
