[Yangsheng Huazhi Tang Formula]
Ren Shen (2 qian), Bai Zhu (3 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Fu Ling (1.5 qian), Gan Cao (0.3 qian), Chuan Xiong (0.7 qian), Chen Pi, Da Fu Pi (each 0.4 qian).
If abdominal and hypochondriac pain or mass-like pain occurs, add Sha Ren (0.5 qian). If food stagnation is due to flour-based foods, add Mai Ya (0.5 qian). If severe abdominal pain is caused by consuming cold noodles, pears, or oranges, add Wu Zhu Yu (1 qian).
Treating postpartum constipation, where mistaken use of purgatives like Da Huang leads to distension, or unceasing pain from blood masses in the abdomen.
Chuan Xiong (1 qian), Bai Shao (1 qian), Ren Shen (1 qian), Fu Ling (1 qian), Dang Gui (4 qian), Chen Pi (0.4 qian), Gan Cao (0.2 qian), Tao Ren (10 grains), Xiang Fu (0.3 qian), Da Fu Pi (0.5 qian), Rou Cong Rong (deprived of woody core, washed with wine, 1.5 qian).
If distension is severe, add an additional 3-4 qian of Ren Shen. If there is mass-like pain, administer this decoction with San Xiao Wan. See formula later. The above three formulas are generally similar and can be used interchangeably. Following Zhu Danxi's prescriptions for modification, repeated use has proven effective. Commonly treating those who have overused Da Huang, administering Ren Shen and Dang Gui up to half a jin or more results in gradual resolution of constipation and swelling.
Within seven days postpartum, for coughs caused by external contraction of wind-cold, accompanied by nasal congestion, heavy voice, and aversion to cold, it is appropriate to use Sheng Hua Tang added with Xing Ren and Jie Geng. If phlegm is present, add Tian Hua Fen; do not use Ma Huang as it may induce sweating. If coughing is accompanied by hypochondriac pain, do not use Chai Hu Tang. If suffering from fire-cough with audible symptoms, scanty phlegm, and red face, do not use cooling medicines. In cases of postpartum fire pathogens or phlegm-dampness, the parturient must be regulated for half a month before cold-cooling agents can be used. Before half a month, priority should still be given to the specific condition of childbirth. Zhu Danxi stated: "Postpartum patients should not undergo surface-releasing treatments, because their interior is deficient."
