Sun Simiao's method for treating rabies bites: In late spring and early summer, dogs often go mad. During this time, people bitten by dogs who die are numerous, yet the world generally ignores it and does not consider it a serious matter.
Those who are bitten lose their spiritual control and develop manic disorders (Kuangji). Among various talismans and medicines for treatment, none is superior to moxibustion. Apply one hundred moxa cones directly at the bite site. Thereafter, apply one moxa cone daily without missing a single day. After completing one hundred days of moxibustion, disaster can be avoided. One must never eat dog meat or silkworm pupae in their lifetime; consuming them will cause the poison to erupt and lead to death. Furthermore, one must be particularly wary of the situation where the wound pain stops initially, and the patient claims to have recovered. This is most terrifying, as great disaster is imminent, and death may occur within a day or evening. If one wishes to perform moxibustion three or four days after being bitten, observe if there is toxic blood in the wound; prick and drain it first, then perform moxibustion.
All the aforementioned moxibustion methods are for emergency relief. All taboos regarding Human Spirit (Renshen) and Blood Branch Blood (Xuezhixue), as well as conditions of strong wind and heavy rain, and the patient's natal destiny day, need not be avoided. One must maintain a reverent and confident mind, quickly examine and use these methods. Having acquired this innate skill, pass it on to others generously, hoping that those with similar aspirations may benefit.
When performing moxibustion, the body must be kept straight. The limbs should not be curled. When seated, avoid leaning forward or backward. When standing, avoid tilting to either side. If the acupoint (Kuxue) is not accurately located during moxibustion, it yields no benefit and merely burns healthy flesh; one must endure the suffering of pain. Generally, when treating illness, moxibustion should be applied to the upper parts before the lower parts, and to fewer points before more points. These principles should be carefully considered.
When applying fire for moxibustion, the red glow under the base of the moxa cone should spread three fen (approx. 1 cm). If the three-fen area does not align with the acupoint or meridian, it is ineffective. Since Ying-Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) meridians and Qi-Blood flow have specific dominions, if the moxa point is misplaced, the fire energy cannot reach far, and the disease will not be cured.
Since ancient times, using fire for moxibustion has required avoiding eight types of wood fires, which must be strictly shunned. The eight woods are: Pine wood fire is difficult to cure and may aggravate the illness; Cypress wood fire damages the spirit and causes excessive sweating; Bamboo wood fire damages tendons and leads to dim vision; Elm wood fire damages bones and causes loss of will; Mulberry wood fire damages flesh and causes emaciation; Jujube wood fire causes internal injury and hematemesis; Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) fire severely damages Qi and vessels; Tangerine wood fire damages Ying-Wei and meridians. Fire obtained by focusing sunlight with a crystal lens onto mugwort is excellent for moxibustion, though difficult for ordinary people to prepare. Alternatively, using a mirror to focus sunlight to ignite the mugwort is also good. However, on cloudy or dark days, obtaining fire is difficult. Therefore, it is better to abandon wood fires altogether. To avoid all taboos for moxibustion, remove old impurities, light a lamp with pure oil, burn the stem of the mugwort on the lamp flame, and use this for moxibustion. This method provides moisture, facilitates easier healing of wounds after moxibustion, and reduces pain. Using candles is even better. Various foreign tribes know the taboos of the eight wood fires; they strike iron against flint to create sparks, ignite the mugwort, and proceed with moxibustion.
