Xu Wenbo treated sudden epistaxis (nosebleed) that would not stop by using a thin cord: if the left nostril bled, tie the right foot; if the right nostril bled, tie the left foot, both at the little toe. If both nostrils bled, tie both feet at the little toes (for women with bound feet, tie at the knee and ankle). If bleeding was profuse and unceasing, grasp the hand, flex the thumb, and moxibustion of three cones (moxa cones) was applied to the upper end of the bone, with each cone sized like a millet grain. The acupoint location should be determined according to the illustration.
The method is the same for both men and women.
Zhang Wenzhong treated difficult labor where the hands or feet presented first. When various talismans and medicines proved ineffective, emergency moxibustion of three cones, sized like mung beans, was applied to the tip of the little toe of the right foot. For women with bound feet, wash the feet with salt water first to warm them, ensuring the qi and blood vessels are open and unobstructed, then apply moxibustion, which leads to immediate normal delivery.
The method is the same for both men and women (for right-sided nosebleed, moxa the left hand; for left-sided nosebleed, moxa the right hand).
Sun Simiao and Zhen Quan treated sudden onset of intestinal hernia (xiaochang shanqi) with excruciating pain.
Method: Apply seven cones of moxibustion on each of the two big toes, with each cone sized like a mung bean. (This acupoint is the same one used by Ge Xianweng, Tao Hongjing, and Sun Simiao previously to treat death-like coma from nightmare. Determine the acupoint according to the illustration; moxibustion can lead to immediate recovery.)
See the illustration in the section treating nightmare-induced coma.
Sun Simiao's method for treating bites from all kinds of venomous snakes: Immediately apply fourteen cones of moxibustion to the fresh bite site to prevent the poison from spreading. In areas without mugwort, use only a paper wick; stop when it causes extreme pain.
Additionally, during summer nights spent sleeping outdoors to cool off, if a snake suddenly enters the mouth and cannot be pulled out, apply moxibustion to the snake's tail to make it exit. In places without moxa fire, use a knife or porcelain edge to cut around the snake's tail until the skin is severed, then pull it; once the skin separates from the flesh, the snake comes out.
Another prescription: Cut open the snake's tail and insert two or three grains of Sichuan pepper (Shu jiao), and the snake will come out.
Qibo and Sun Simiao's method for treating dog bites: Have three people of different surnames apply one cone of moxibustion each at the bitten wound site, leading to recovery.
