Between Heaven and Earth, all things are nurtured through the interaction of Yin and Yang; when male and female essences combine, all things are born. This is the natural law of creation. It also embodies the Dao of "non-thought and non-action." Therefore, where there are humans, there are husbands and wives; where there are husbands and wives, there are offspring. How can there be a notion of lacking heirs? However, there are times when Heaven does not generate, and regions where Earth does not produce vegetation; thus, humans cannot be without those who lack heirs. If so, those who can bear children do so naturally, and those who cannot lack them naturally. Then, what is the purpose of seeking heirs? Can they truly be sought? Can they truly not be sought? There are reasons and methods within this. The so-called methods are not for those who cannot conceive due to innate endowment, nor for those who are young, strong, and vigorous. For those who cannot conceive due to innate endowment, it is beyond human power to change. For the young and vigorous, conception occurs through the natural harmony of Yin and Yang, requiring no conscious effort or knowledge. It is only for those who are capable of having children but fail to do so, finding the lack of descendants unbearable, which is not destined by Heaven; and for the elderly who have no sons, whose vitality declines daily, how can they compare to youth? This is why human effort can intervene, leading to discussions and methods. Although methods passed down from antiquity are numerous, in my opinion, their profound essence has not been fully explored. Therefore, I list these methods under five categories: Heavenly Timing (Tian Shi), Geographical Advantage (Di Li), Human Affairs (Ren Shi), Medicine and Diet (Yao Shi), and Diseases (Ji Bing). Violating any one of these is sufficient to ruin the endeavor. My guest had a son in his late years, relying on these principles. Those suffering from this issue should examine and trust these words. Thus, plans for continuing the lineage may not be trivial, hence the title *Yilin Ce* (Strategy for Suitable Offspring).
Regarding the timing of intercourse for conception, ancient texts suggest choosing auspicious days and hours, such as those blessed by Tian De and Yue De virtues, or when the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are prosperous, while avoiding days associated with Bing and Ding (Fire elements). However, in moments of haste, how can one select beforehand? Such advice seems pedantic and impractical. Nevertheless, when the weather is clear and bright, the wind is gentle, the climate is harmonious and refreshing, and the mind is tranquil and the spirit relaxed, one can discern suitable conditions spontaneously. Conception under such circumstances yields children who are not only healthy but also intelligent and virtuous. The fetal Yuan Qi (Primordial Energy) and constitution are fundamentally established here. Conversely, those who ignore taboos and encounter dark, foggy weather receive qi of stupidity and confusion; witnessing solar or lunar eclipses exposes them to qi of deficiency and conflict; experiencing violent thunderstorms subjects them to qi of ferocity, anger, and terror; encountering erratic temperature changes (neither Yin nor Yang) infects them with qi of deceit and treachery. Thus, when cosmic Qi is abundant, aligning with it brings longevity; when Qi is contracting, violating it leads to premature death. Furthermore, throughout life—from growth to maturity, old age, and death—every stage involves receiving Qi from Creation. Whether wise or foolish, virtuous or unworthy, all inherit their nature from Heaven and Earth. This is the fundamental principle of sensing the origin. To reshape destiny and assist in the creative process of Heaven and Earth, one must prioritize this understanding.
