Due to insufficient blood following childbirth, liver deficiency often damages the eyes. Avoid overusing the eyes and avoid sorrowful weeping. Tearing leads to drowsiness and internal disharmony of qi. Empty orifices easily invite wind pathogens. Prolonged dampness, red discharge, and debris can develop into severe conditions. Consuming excessive dry, greasy foods, or the "Five Pungent Spices" (Wuxin) may contribute. Presence of damp-phlegm and overwork are also factors. These conditions can cause external calamities (eye diseases). Early treatment prevents recurrence.

This section specifically discusses eye diseases occurring postpartum. Childbirth disturbs all meridians and vessels, injuring both qi and blood, resulting in extreme deficiency. Thus, pathogens easily invade. The generating qi of the Liver is very weak; insufficient blood fails to nourish the Gallbladder, leading to reduced bile juice. Consequently, the essence, paste, qi, and fluids of the eyes lose their source of transformation, making eye diseases common. However, severity and location vary: some suffer from intermittent hot and cold tearing, internal cloudiness, and dim vision due to eye strain, excessive thinking, and grief; others have loose orifices inviting wind pathogens, causing damp rot and headache; some have internal cloudiness due to deficient damp-heat affecting the brain; others have external obstructions due to overwork, indulgence in pungent and hot foods, and heat diseases damaging eye blood. All stem from internal insufficiency. Those who practice self-care keep illness mild and prevent progression; those who neglect care and indulge in depletion face varied complications. Generally, postpart illnesses should be treated early. Delay allows qi and blood to settle while pathogens penetrate deeply, making treatment difficult. Obvious external symptoms prompt early treatment, whereas subtle, slow-onset internal harms are often ignored until regret comes too late. In treating postpartum conditions, since there is no surplus blood, one must protect Liver qi and avoid harsh herbs that damage the Liver. Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) for nourishing blood should be the primary formula.

Shudihuang Tang (Cooked Rehmannia Decoction): Treats postpartum women with blurry vision, dizziness, deficiency-thirst, dry mouth, shortness of breath, and weak legs.

Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao) enters the Jueyin channel and nourishes blood vessels as the Minister herb. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) benefits primordial qi and tonifies Spleen and Stomach; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) tonifies Spleen and harmonizes blood as the Assistant herb. Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) assists the ascent of clear yang qi; Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) regulates blood qi and disperses stagnation as the Envoy herb.

Sizhi Xiangfu Wan (Four-Processed Cyperi Pill): Treats postpartum women with excessive bleeding from metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (Benglou), causing pain in the eyeball and irregular menstruation.
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi, pounded, skin and hairs removed, clean seeds 8 liang divided into four parts, boiled/dried/stir-fried with wine, vinegar, child's urine, and salt water) Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, wine-fried) Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang, each 1 liang, boiled in wine/water until soft, mashed into paste) Lantanae Herba (Zelan ye, clean leaves) Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, wine-washed and stir-fried) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, wine-washed and stir-fried) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, stir-fried, each 1.5 liang) Leonuri Herba (Yimucao, 4 liang, do not touch iron)

Take 2-3 qian per dose on an empty stomach with boiling white water. Can also be taken long after meals.

In this formula, Four-Processed Cyperi Rhizoma (Sizhi Xiangfu) is the Sovereign herb, benefiting blood and qi. Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu - *Note: Text says Baizhu here but ingredient list did not explicitly include it, likely implied or error in original text context regarding 'harmonizing blood'*) are Ministers, herbs for tonifying, nourishing, and harmonizing blood. Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) is the Assistant, a kidney-tonifying and yin-nourishing herb. Lantanae Herba (Zelan ye) and Leonuri Herba (Yimucao) are Envoys, herbs treating hundred postpartum diseases, promoting blood circulation, expelling stasis, and generating new blood.
