还阴救苦汤(见卷二)
White-eye pain presents with various symptoms such as exterior and interior patterns. If the pain is severe and radiates from the outside inward, warm dispersing methods should be employed. For cases without redness or swelling but with a gritty, painful sensation, it indicates fire latent in the Qi level (Qi-level heat), and Xiebai San (White-Draining Powder) is the primary formula. If the white of the eye turns blue-green, this is due to constrained pathogenic factors steaming and forcing their way into the eyeball; it is urgent to regulate Qi to nourish the area.
Without swelling or redness, accompanied by discomfort, grittiness, and blurred vision, it is named White-Grittiness Syndrome (Baise). This results from latent fire in the Qi level and damp-heat in the Spleen and Lungs.
This condition is colloquially called "white-eye" in southern regions. Its pathology involves no swelling or redness, only grittiness and pain. It stems from hidden fire within the Qi level and damp-heat in the collaterals of the Spleen and Lungs. It is common in autumn. Some wish to call it "Rice-Awn Red Eye," which is incorrect.
Sangbaipi Decoction (Mulberry Bark Decoction)
Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 1.5 qian) Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 0.8 fen) Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, 0.8 fen) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.25 qian) Maimendong (Tuber Ophiopogonis, heart removed) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 qian) Xuanfuhua (Capitium Inulae, 1 qian) Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi, 0.5 qian) Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis, 0.7 fen) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 0.7 fen) Baifuling (Poria, 0.7 fen)
Decoct these ingredients. Use two zhong of plain water, boil down to eight-tenths, strain, and take warm.
When pathogenic factors attack the essence, fluid, and divine paste causing them to wander, and the color changes to blue-green losing the white sclera, urgently seek a skilled physician to avoid regretting too late when the damage is complete.
This condition refers to the sudden change of the white sclera to blue-green. The pathology is particularly acute because the Qi Wheel (sclera/conjunctiva) is originally white. Constrained pathogens steam and force their way into the eyeball, causing the aqueous humor to seep out into the Qi Wheel, thus changing its color to blue-green. The pupil will inevitably suffer abnormalities in size. If untreated, damage to the pupil will result in lifelong disability. It is suitable to administer Tianma Tang (Gastrodia Decoction).
Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae) Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, body part) Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (all in equal proportions)
Decoct these ingredients. Use two zhong of plain water, boil down to eight-tenths, strain, and take hot after meals.
If the white sclera turns blue following Taiyang Cold Damage (Shanghan) or malaria, add Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Maimendong (Tuber Ophiopogonis, heart removed), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Tianhuafen (Radix Puerariae).
If the white sclera turns blue due to toxic vapors attacking, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii, stir-fried and crushed), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), and Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis).
