Note: There are two types of pain in the supraorbital ridge. The eyes belong to the Liver; if the pain is caused by Liver deficiency, the pain in the supraorbital ridge intensifies upon exposure to light, and it is appropriate to take Shengdi Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). If there is pain in the supraorbital ridge accompanied by the inability to open the eyes, with severe pain day and night, it is appropriate to use Dao Tan Wan Tang (Phlegm-Draining Pill Decoction) or similar formulas, taken with Ya Cha (Bud Tea) and Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Powder) to swallow Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi (Qingzhou White Pills), which is also effective. Those who initially present with supraorbital ridge pain mostly suffer from Liver Fire flaming upward; those with severe anger often have this condition. Although it is called a Wind syndrome, it is actually caused by Fire, specifically where excessive Heat generates Wind. Generally, one must suppress Liver Fire, and if Wind-Phlegm is present, treat both simultaneously.
Yin pathogenic factors causing pain at the temporal angle often occur when exposed to heat; Yuan Qi deficiency leads to internal cataracts, while excess Fire causes external disasters.
This section specifically discusses diseases of the frontal bone angle and the supraorbital ridge. Attacks often occur during the time when the Six Yang meridians are dominant. If Yuan Qi is deficient and essence is weak, it constitutes an internal syndrome; if accompanied by Fire, it constitutes an external syndrome. It is appropriate to take:
Jiawei Chaihu Tang (Modified Bupleurum Decoction)
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma preparata), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xiang Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Su Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, five leaves), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) (all in equal proportions).
Crush these into coarse powder. Add three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), two zhong of clear water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, and take after meals.
Sheng Shu Di Huang Tang (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia Decoction)
Treats dim vision and severe supraorbital ridge pain. This is due to Liver deficiency; the treatment method should be to nourish blood, cool blood, and benefit blood, thereby descending Phlegm-Fire and eliminating Wind-Heat.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuan Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Crush these into coarse powder. Use two zhong of clear water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, and take far from meal times.
Qu Feng Shang Qing San (Wind-Expelling Upper-Clearing Powder)
Treats supraorbital ridge pain caused by Wind-Heat attacking upward.
Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine, 2 qian), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1.5 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chai Hu Shao (Bupleuri Radix tip, each 1 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.2 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica, 0.8 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Take 4 qian per dose, with two zhong of clear water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, and take after meals.
Shang Qing San (Upper-Clearing Powder)
Treats headache due to Wind, where both the supraorbital ridge and eye sockets are painfully unbearable.
Ru Xiang (Olibanum, separately ground), Mo Yao (Myrrha, ground, each 1 qian), Nao Zi (Borneolum Syntheticum, separately ground, 0.5 fen), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Radix) (each 0.5 fen).
Grind into fine powder. For each use, take an amount equivalent to "yi zi" (a very small measure), hold water in the mouth, and insufflate the powder into the nose; this is highly effective.
