A question was asked: "Some people see clearly during the day but cannot see at night. Even with firelight or moonlight, they ultimately fail to perceive objects. Why is this?" The answer was: "This is a disease of Yang Qi deficiency unable to counter Yin Qi. It is what the proverb calls 'que mang' (night blindness)." Another question was asked: "How do you know this?" The answer was: "The *Su Wen* chapter on 'Sheng Qi Tong Tian Lun' (Treatise on Vital Qi Connecting with Heaven) states: Since ancient times, Qi connecting with Heaven is the root of life. Within the universe and the nine provinces, Qi is universally interconnected. The nine orifices, five zang organs, and twelve joints of the human body all connect with Heavenly Qi. It also states: In humans, Yin and Yang Qi generate at dawn, peak at noon, and become deficient at dusk, when the 'Qi gates' (pores) close. Furthermore, if Yang fails to overcome Yin, the Qi of the five zang organs becomes deficient, and the nine orifices become obstructed. Thus, we know this." Another question was asked: "How can one distinguish the Yang Qi?" The answer was: "Regarding human Qi responding to the four seasons, Spring and Summer are Yang. Regarding Qi responding to a single day, from dawn to dusk is Yang. Regarding Qi responding to the five zang and six fu organs, the six fu organs are Yang." Another question was asked: "Why can Yang not counter Yin?" The answer was: "Human life relies primarily on the Spleen and Stomach in the middle jiao. The *Ling Lan Mi Dian Lun* (Secret Canon of Spiritual Orchids) states: The Spleen and Stomach are the officials managing granaries; in the Five Elements, they belong to Earth. Earth generates all things, thus serving as the source of Yang Qi. Their nature favors growth and opposes killing; they grow in Spring and Summer and store in Autumn and Winter. If there are excessive worries, thoughts, fears, or anger, or overwork and irregular eating habits that exceed moderation, these can injure the Spleen and Stomach. When the Spleen and Stomach are injured, Yang Qi sinks downward. When Yang Qi sinks, the Yang Qi within the five zang and six fu organs declines. Once Yang Qi declines, Yin Qi within the five zang and six fu organs becomes predominant. With Yin Qi predominant, Yang cannot counter it." Another question was asked: "Why is vision lost at night?" The answer was: "The eyes belong to the Liver, which is the Foot Jueyin channel. The Shen Shui (spiritual water, referring to ocular fluids) belongs to the Kidney, which is the Foot Shaoyin channel. The Liver belongs to Wood, and the Kidney belongs to Water. Water generates Wood, representing a mutually generating relationship. Moreover, anger injures the Liver, and fear injures the Kidney. If the Liver and Kidney are injured, they cannot generate each other. Daytime is Yang, representing Heavenly Yang; daytime is Yang, and humans correspond to it. Although injured by worries, anger, overwork, etc., causing Yang Qi to sink, when encountering the time of Heavenly Yang abundance and Yin deficiency, our own Yang Qi, though weak, must rise in correspondence. Thus, vision remains clear during the day. Nighttime is Yin, representing Heavenly Yin; nighttime is Yin, and humans correspond to it. Having been injured by worries, anger, etc., causing Yang Qi to sink, and encountering the time of Heavenly Yin abundance and Yang deficiency, our own Yang Qi, already weak, must subside in correspondence. Thus, vision is lost at night." Another question was asked: "How should it be treated?" The answer was: "Use medicines that suppress Yin and raise Yang, primarily using Jueming Yeling San." Another question was asked: "Does this disease appear in the rich and noble, or the poor and humble?" The answer was: "Worries, anger, overwork, and irregular eating are indeed common among the poor and humble, but the rich and noble are not exempt from them."
Jueming Yeling San (Cassia Seed and Bat Dropping Decoction) (Treats eyes becoming dim at night; even with lamp light or moonlight, objects cannot be seen.)
Ye Ming Sha (Night-bright Sand / Crotalariae Semen, prepared separately, 2 qian) Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell / Haliotidis Concha, vinegar-processed, 2 qian) Jie Yang Gan (Ram Liver / Ovis Aries Hepatis, 1 liang, used raw; if using Pig Liver / Sus Scrofa Domesticus Hepatis, use domestic pig liver only, not wild or sow's liver, to avoid eye injury.)
Grind the two medicines into powder and mix evenly. Cut the liver into two slices with a bamboo knife. Spread the medicine powder on one slice, cover with the other slice, and bind tightly with hemp rope to prevent leakage. Take one large bowl of rice washing water. Place the liver and medicine in a clay pot, ensuring no contact with iron vessels. Boil until only a small half-bowl remains. Before going to bed, consume both the liver and the medicinal juice together.
In the above formula, Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha) suppresses Kidney Yin and benefits essence as the Sovereign drug; Ye Ming Sha (Crotalariae Semen) raises Yang Qi and treats night blindness as the Minister drug; Rice Washing Water (Oryzae Sativa Aqua) regulates the Spleen and Stomach as the Assistant drug; The combination of Liver with Liver guides the formula into the Liver Channel as the Envoy drug.
