In spring, the normal pulse of the Liver (Gan) should be Xian (Wiry) and Chang (Long). The normal pulse of the Heart (Xin) should be Xian (Wiry), Hong (Surging), and Fu (Floating). The normal pulse of the Spleen (Pi) should be Xian (Wiry) and Huan (Moderate/Relaxed). The normal pulse of the Lung (Fei) should be Xian (Wiry) and Wei Fu (Slightly Floating). The normal pulse of the Kidney (Shen) should be Xian (Wiry) and Chen Ru (Deep and Soft). The normal pulse of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) should be Xian (Wiry) and Hua (Slippery).
In summer, the normal pulse of the Heart (Xin) should be Hong (Surging), Da (Large), and San (Scattered). The normal pulse of the Spleen (Pi) should be Hong (Surging) and Chi Huan (Slow and Moderate). The normal pulse of the Lung (Fei) should be Hong (Surging) and Fu Se (Floating and Choppy). The normal pulse of the Kidney (Shen) should be Hong (Surging) and Chen Hua (Deep and Slippery). The normal pulse of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) is the same as that of the Kidney. The normal pulse of the Liver (Gan) should be Hong (Surging) and Xian Chang (Wiry and Long).
In autumn, the normal pulse of the Lung (Fei) should be Fu (Floating) and Duan Se (Short and Choppy). The normal pulse of the Kidney (Shen) should be Wei (Slight) and Fu (Hidden/Deep). The normal pulse of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) should be Wei (Slight) and Hua (Slippery). The normal pulse of the Liver (Gan) should be Fu (Floating) and Xian Xi (Wiry and Fine). The normal pulse of the Heart (Xin) should be Fu (Floating) and Hong (Surging). The normal pulse of the Spleen (Pi) should be Fu (Floating) and Wei Huan (Slightly Moderate).
In winter, the normal pulse of the Kidney (Shen) should be Chen (Deep) and Hua (Slippery). The normal pulse of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) is the same as that of the Kidney. The normal pulse of the Liver (Gan) should be Chen (Deep) and Xian (Wiry). The normal pulse of the Heart (Xin) should be Chen (Deep) and Hong (Surging). The normal pulse of the Spleen (Pi) should be Chen (Deep) and Huan (Moderate). The normal pulse of the Lung (Fei) should be Chen (Deep) and Se (Choppy).
If an Autumn pulse appears in Spring, death will occur on Geng-Xin days. (This is because Metal overcomes Wood.)
If a Winter pulse appears in Summer, death will occur on Ren-Gui days. (This is because Water overcomes Fire.)
If a Spring pulse appears in the four seasons (referring to the transition periods or late stages of each season), death will occur on Jia-Yi days. (This is because Wood overcomes Earth.)
If a Summer pulse appears in Autumn, death will occur on Bing-Ding days. (This is because Fire overcomes Metal.)
If a Four-Seasons pulse appears in Winter, death will occur on Wu-Ji days. (This is because Earth overcomes Water.)
The type of pathogenic factor where one Zang organ overcomes another in a way that cannot be resisted is called Zei Xie (Robber Evil); such conditions are indeed difficult to treat. As for those that can be overcome, they are called Wei Xie (Minor Evil); even without treatment, they may resolve spontaneously. Wang Shuhe stated in his "Mai Fu" (Ode to Pulse): "Spring with Spleen pulse need not be treated; Winter with Heart pulse need not be treated; Summer with Lung pulse is hard to save; Autumn with Liver pulse leaves no doubt." Why then fear Minor Evil?
Upon observing the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot), it says: "Water moves and Fire shines; Fire flares and Earth levels; Earth flourishes and Metal generates; Metal flourishes and Water fills." Thus, we know Wang Shuhe's theory has its basis. Let us discuss "Earth flourishes and Metal generates." If Earth Qi is prosperous, it generates Metal to overcome Wood, causing the Liver pulse to appear Xian (Wiry) and Huan (Moderate). In this case, the original pulse remains, and if the Spleen invades, this is what is called "Minor Evil," which is not worth worrying about. However, if the original pulse completely disappears and only the Spleen pulse is seen, this is truly harmful. The same logic applies to other Zang organs.
