The *Yangsheng Lun* (Treatise on Nourishing Life) states: Although the autumn wind is refreshing, it is dominated by a desiccating and killing energy, causing all things to wither and suffer at this time. To regulate and nourish oneself in accordance with the season, keeping the mind peaceful, thereby mitigating the harshness of the autumn qi, is the way to respond to autumn qi and nourish the principle of "receiving" (Shou).
Regulation Methods:
Do not consume excessive pungent flavors; reduce pungency to nourish Liver Qi. (In autumn, Lung Metal qi is at its peak. Pungency belongs to Metal, while the Liver belongs to Wood. There is a fear that pungency will assist Metal in overcoming Wood, causing disease in the Liver.)
Do not eat raw or cold foods, to prevent dysentery.
Do not eat fresh ginger, as it is intensely hot and damages the eyes.
Do not crave new coolness. (The Shu points of the five Zang organs all converge on the back. After intense heat, seeking relief through wind exposure is the source of wind-stroke. Therefore, the back should be kept warm and protected.)
On the first day of the eighth lunar month, use silk gauze to collect dew from the tips of hundred herbs, wipe both eyes with it, and vision will become doubly bright. Dew from cypress trees is especially effective.
On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, wear cornel (Zhuyu), drink chrysanthemum wine, which dispels disease and benefits the person.
The *Lü Zhi* states: The North belongs to Yin, implying hiding and storing. Yang is hidden below, corresponding to the season of Winter. At this time, one should conserve essence and nourish spirit, employing strong convergence and storage. It is like plants being nurtured during winter; only then can they flourish and thrive when spring arrives. If the body is harmed at this time, when spring arrives and Yang begins to ascend, lacking a fundamental root below, withering and decline are inevitable.
Regulation Methods:
Do not consume excessive salty flavors; reduce saltiness to nourish Heart Qi. (In winter, Kidney Water qi is at its peak. Saltiness belongs to Water, while the Heart belongs to Fire. There is a fear that saltiness will assist Water in overcoming Fire, causing disease in the Heart.)
It is not advisable to sweat excessively, lest Yang Qi be leaked.
Do not consume excessive green onions, as this may also disperse Yang Qi.
Bathing is not suitable. Yang Qi resides within; hot water forces sweating. (When sweat is produced, pores open, making one most susceptible to Cold pathogens. Injury by Cold in winter leads to Warm diseases in spring.)
It is not advisable to go out early into frost, or to drink a little alcohol to counteract cold air.
It is not advisable to encounter "thief-evil" winds. (In winter, southeast winds are considered thief-evil winds and should be carefully avoided.)
On the Winter Solstice, cook porridge with adzuki beans (*Vigna angularis*) and have the whole household consume it, which can prevent plagues and seasonal epidemic conditions.
It is advisable to store snow water, boil it for tea, which can resolve all kinds of heat toxins.
