Discussion on pediatric stranguria (Lin syndrome). This condition arises from heat in the Bladder, causing obstruction of the water passages, resulting in dribbling urine that cannot be expelled. Symptoms may include urine resembling bean dregs, or sand-like stones, or cold stranguria (stranguria caused by cold pathogen) appearing like paste, or hot stranguria (stranguria caused by heat pathogen) resembling blood in urine.
Wu Lin San (Five Strangurias Powder)
Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Skin, peeled, 6 fen), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root, peeled, 2 fen), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, 2 fen), Tiao Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis, 3 fen), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, each 5 fen). Another prescription adds Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, fresh), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), Hua Shi (Talcum), and Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), each 3 fen.
Crush the above ingredients for one dose. Add a bundle of Jixin (Centella asiatica herb/stem). Decoct in water and take warm.
Discussion on pediatric hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), and lower bleeding (bleeding from lower orifices). It is appropriate to use:
Huang Jin Wan (Golden Pill)
Huang Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis), quantity不拘 (unrestricted). Grind into powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like Euryale seed (Qian Shi). For a three-year-old child, administer one pill per dose, dissolved and taken with salt water.
One prescription for persistent hematemesis in children: Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) powder, 1 qian; Dan Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean), 30 pieces. Decoct in one cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cups. Remove dregs and take warm. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
One prescription for hematemesis and epistaxis:
Bai Zhi San (Cypress Branch Powder)
Dry Cypress branches and dry Lotus rhizome nodes (Ou Jie), equal parts, ground into powder. For a three-year-old child, administer 0.5 qian per dose. Mix with one spoonful of Lotus node juice and honey, and take with plain boiled water.
Case: A newborn infant presents with complete retention of both urine and feces, abdominal distension so severe it feels like death. Urgently, have someone rinse their mouth thoroughly with warm water, then use suction (cupping-like oral suction) on seven areas of the infant: anterior and posterior chest/back, below the umbilicus, and palms and soles of hands and feet. Suck each area 3-5 times, rinsing the mouth between sucks, until the skin turns red. The bowels and bladder will open spontaneously shortly thereafter; otherwise, there is no hope of survival.
Discussion on urinary retention in children: This is due to excessive fire in the Bladder.
Shen Tong San (Divine Unblocking Powder)
For unbearable urinary obstruction and涩 (astringency/difficulty): Use Er Cha (Child's Tea/Catechu) powder, 1 qian, delivered with decoction of Bian Xu (Polygonum Aviculare Herb). Within moments, urine will gush forth like a spring.
One prescription for urinary retention with severe abdominal distension: Ye Di Ji Li Zi (Wild Tribulus Seeds), quantity unrestricted. Roast until yellow, grind into powder, and take with warm wine. Immediate relief occurs.
Another method: Burn Huo Ma Ren (Hemp Seed) to ash, mix with wine, and take orally.
Discussion on constipation in children: This is due to toxicity in the Zang-Fu organs. Wind and heat pathogens stagnate in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), causing chest and diaphragm elevation/distension and constipation.
Mo Yao San (Myrrh Powder)
Mo Yao (Myrrha), Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange, stir-fried), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), each 2 qian; Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each 1 qian.
Crush the ingredients. Take 2 qian per dose, add 3 slices of Ginger, decoct in water, and take orally.
One prescription for newborns who have not passed stool or urine for two to three days: Mix Cong Jiang (Green Onion Juice) and Ren Ru (Human Milk) in equal halves. Apply to the mouth and allow the infant to swallow along with breast milk. Bowel movement will ensue.
An Umbilical Application Method for treating pediatric urinary and fecal retention: Take one stalk of Lian Gen Bai Cong (Green Onion White with roots), one piece of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), 20 grains of Dan Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean), and one small spoonful of Salt. Grind together into a paste, form into a cake, and apply to the umbilicus. Warm it before application and secure with silk cloth. After some time, Qi will penetrate and excretion will occur. If ineffective, replace with another cake.
Er Miao San (Two Wonders Powder)
In the sixth and seventh lunar months, search for Qiang Lang (Scarab Beetle/Dung Beetle) in cow dung. Quantity unrestricted. String them up and dry in the shade for storage. When needed, take one whole beetle, place it on a clean brick, and dry thoroughly around all sides using ash fire. Cut horizontally through the waist with a knife. For constipation, use the upper half; for urinary retention, use the lower half; for both, use the whole beetle. Grind into fine powder and take mixed with freshly drawn water.
