一治咳嗽秘方
款冬花(三钱) 石膏(三钱) 硼砂(七厘) 甘草(三钱)
上为末。吹入喉内。用细茶漱下。即好。
Differentiate the pulse of cough to identify the cause. A floating pulse indicates wind, a tight pulse indicates cold, a rapid pulse indicates heat, a fine pulse indicates dampness, and a choppy pulse indicates deficiency due to sexual exhaustion. A soggy pulse at the right Guan position indicates spleen injury from diet; a wiry and short pulse at the left Guan position indicates liver depletion from extreme fatigue. A floating and short pulse indicates lung injury, which should manifest as cough. Coughs originating from the five zang organs should be viewed according to their respective organ positions. A floating and tight pulse with deficiency indicates cold; a deep and rapid pulse with excess indicates heat; a surging and slippery pulse often involves phlegm; a wiry and choppy pulse indicates blood deficiency. If the body is robust but the pulse is fine, and breathing is insufficient to sustain itself, or if the pulse is deep, small, and hidden, these are all death pulses. Only those with a floating and large pulse accompanied by cough have a chance of survival. "Ke" (cough) refers to sound without phlegm, caused by lung qi injury and lack of clarity. "Sou" (phlegmy cough) refers to phlegm production, caused by spleen dampness generating phlegm. Coughing together results from lung qi injury stirring up spleen dampness. The root of the disease must distinguish between the six qi pathogens and the five zang organs, but the key lies in the lungs, as the lungs govern qi and voice. Dai Yun stated: Caused by wind-cold, symptoms include nasal congestion, heavy voice, and aversion to cold; caused by fire, symptoms include sound, little phlegm, and red face; caused by labor, symptoms include night sweats; combined with phlegm, symptoms often include aversion to heat; lung distension manifests as panting and fullness upon movement,急促 breathing and heavy respiration; phlegm syndrome manifests as phlegm sounds upon coughing, stopping when phlegm is expelled. These are general categories, but one must clarify their accuracy. Treatment methods must distinguish between new and old diseases, and excess and deficiency. New diseases caused by wind-cold are dispersed; those caused by fire-heat are cleared; those with phlegm-saliva are transformed; those with damp-heat are purged. Old diseases belong to deficiency or stagnation; qi deficiency is tonified, blood deficiency is nourished, stagnation is opened, moistened, collected, and descended; this is the method for treating deficiency.
Discuss seasonal common cold. Symptoms include fever, headache, cough with heavy voice, thick sticky sputum, epigastric fullness, vomiting of phlegm-water. This formula relaxes the middle and pleases the diaphragm, preventing spleen injury. This medicine greatly resolves muscle-layer heat and is effective for phlegm-cough, panting, and heat that may develop into consumptive disease.

I used Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) for one dose to disperse cold pathogen, then Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Enhancing Decoction) to solidify interstices, cured. Later due to labor and anger, relapsed. Self-used previous decoction, condition worsened. Added Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Aurantii Fructus (Zhishi), leading to abdominal fullness, anorexia, scanty urine. Used Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) combined with Siling San (Four-Ling Powder), previous symptoms worsened, urinary retention.
