1. For swelling and pain in the legs and feet caused by beating with a staff: Take one stem of a plant from the Malvaceae family (Hibiscus), pound it into a paste, and apply it to the affected area. If it dries, reapply. After one night, the blood stasis will dissipate, and the condition will heal.
2. For chronic non-healing staff wounds: Apply the spinal cord of a male pig to the broken and swollen areas day and night; it will heal immediately.
3. For swelling and pain caused by blood invading the chest cavity due to beating: Take three qian of calcined alum (Duan Shi), stir it in water until clarified, then add five qian of sesame oil. Stir with a gold-ring leg tool to form a paste. Apply with a chicken feather so that blood and fluid drain continuously. The swelling will subside and pain cease shortly thereafter.
4. Before being beaten, finely chop white beeswax, place it in a bowl, and soak it in boiling wine for oral consumption. This prevents pain upon impact.
5. Formula for treating staff wounds: Mix two fen of sesame oil, one fen of water, and one qian of lead tetroxide (Huang Dan) in a bowl. Stir with a silver hairpin to form a paste. Apply with a goose feather brush, cover with paper, and repeat four to five times daily to promote downward movement of blood stasis, resulting in immediate reduction of swelling and cessation of pain.
6. Treatment for staff wounds and all stubborn ulcers, whether long-standing or recent:
Beeswax (two liang), Pine resin (Liang Xiang, two liang, powdered and black impurities removed), Sesame oil (three liang, warmed over fire), Frankincense (Ru Xiang, powdered, five fen), Myrrh (Mo Yao, powdered, five fen).
First, melt the beeswax in a porcelain bowl over low heat. Tap the side of the bowl with a chopstick and gradually add the pine resin, frankincense, and myrrh. Remove the bowl from the heat, add the warm sesame oil, and mix well. Allow to cool, then immerse in a water vat to remove "fire toxicity." After three days, take it out, spread the medicine on single sheets of oiled paper, and apply to the affected area.
7. For severe staff injuries where toxic blood attacks the heart, approaching death:
Sappan wood (Su Mu, three qian), Safflower (Hong Hua, three qian), Tail of Angelica sinensis (Gui Wei, three qian), Rhubarb (Da Huang, three qian).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Decoct in a large cup of urine from a young boy until reduced to one cup. Drink hot at any time.
8. For staff injury wounds that ulcerate and fail to heal for a long time, which is due to deficiency of Qi and Blood:
Ginseng (Ren Shen), Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu, rhizome removed, roasted), Poria cocos (Bai Fu Ling, peel removed), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), White peony root (Bai Shao), Tangerine peel (Chen Pi), Prepared Rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang), Cyperus rotundus (Xiang Fu), Fritillaria (Bei Mu), Platycodon root (Jie Geng), Licorice root (Gan Cao) (all in equal parts).
Cut into pieces for one dose, decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach. If there are alternating chills and fever, add Bupleurum (Chai Hu) and Groundtree bark (Di Gu Pi). If there is dry mouth, add Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi) and Ophiopogon (Mai Men Dong). If the pus is thin, add Astragalus (Huang Qi - inferred from context as character missing). If there is excessive pus, add Ligusticum (Chuan Xiong). If muscle growth is slow, add Belamcanda (Bai Lian) and Cinnamon twig (Rou Gui).
9. Bai Long Bang Chuang Gao (White Dragon Staff Ulcer Ointment), transmitted from "Fang Wai Yi Ren Zhuan":
Rendered lard (La Zhu You, one liang seven qian), White beeswax (Bai La), Calomel (Qing Fen), Lead carbonate (Ding Fen) (each five qian), Yellow beeswax (Huang La, three qian), Camphor (Chao Nao, two qian five fen), Frankincense (Ru Xiang, one qian), Myrrh (Mo Yao, two qian), Borneol (Bing Pian, one fen).
Grind all ingredients into powder. First, melt the lard with the two types of wax, then mix with the powdered herbs. Spread and apply.
10. For staff wounds that ulcerate and develop maggots: Calcine Alum (Zao Fan), grind into powder, and sprinkle dry powder directly into the wound. The maggots will die immediately.
