Pediatric residual toxins following smallpox/rubella (Douzhen). Mild cases manifest as exudation of body fluids on the skin surface accompanied by itching; severe cases present with swelling and obstruction in the limbs and joints, causing pain. If accompanied by fever and constipation, Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Decoction) is indicated. If there is fever but normal bowel movements, Qingre Xiaodu San (Heat-Clearing and Detoxifying Powder) is used. If bowel movements are normal but thirst is present, Maimen Dong Yin (Ophiopogon Decoction) is prescribed. If there is swelling, pain, fever, and thirst, Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Recipe for Saving Lives Decoction) is applied.
Generally, if the base of the lesion is red and itchy, it indicates Blood Deficiency (Xue Xu); Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) is used. If the color is pale and itchy, it indicates Qi Deficiency (Qi Xu); Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) is used. If the color is red and painful, it indicates Blood Heat (Xue Re); Siwu Tang plus Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) is used. If the color is pale and not painful, it indicates Dual Deficiency of Qi and Blood (Qi Xue Xu); Tuoli San (Support-the-Interior Powder) is used.
If pus does not form or fails to rot, it indicates Dual Deficiency of Qi and Blood; Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) is used. If the pus has ruptured but fails to heal and close up, it indicates Spleen Qi Deficiency (Pipi Xu); Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) is used. If pressing the area causes an indentation that rebounds immediately upon releasing pressure, it indicates internal pus; it should be punctured immediately to prevent the pathogenic factor from attacking the interior organs. Once the pus is discharged, the child will be safe, and medication is unnecessary. If the pus is thin and clear, or if pain recurs, or if symptoms such as fatigue, fever, and thirst appear, these are due to extreme deficiency of Qi and Blood. Urgent supplementation with herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) is required. If critical malignant symptoms appear amidst a deficiency pattern, the condition is incurable. If no malignant symptoms appear amidst an excess pattern, spontaneous recovery is likely.
One discussion states: For residual toxins after smallpox/rubella, if Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) is taken first, the heat-toxin may remain unresolved, aggregating without dispersing. This can lead to redness, swelling, or carbuncles/toxins on the head top, chest, back, hands, feet, and abdominal joints. Xiaodu Yin or Wufu Huadu Dan (Five Blessings Toxin-Resolving Pill) is suitable.
Xiaodu Yin Composition: Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 5 fen); Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced into powder, 1 fen); Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 3 fen). The above ingredients are chopped, decocted in water, and taken orally.
One discussion states: When residual toxins after smallpox/rubella are unresolved, sores and boils often appear on the head, face, and body. Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) heat stagnation manifests as swelling and cracking of lips and mouth with sores, bleeding gums, foul breath, sore throat, and thirst.
Wufu Huadu Dan Composition: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced, 3 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Chifuling (Poria cum Rhizoma Polypori), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) (each 5 qian), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 6 qian), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 3 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 2 qian), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Fugan (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 qian). The above ingredients are ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a longan fruit. Take one pill per dose, dissolved and taken with Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang). If convulsions are present, coat the pills with Zhusha (Cinnabar).
One discussion states: Regardless of which meridian the toxin emerges from after smallpox/rubella, when redness and swelling first appear, use Black Beans, Green Beans, and Red Beans soaked in vinegar, ground into a paste. Apply frequently with a chicken feather brush. The swelling subsides instantly with miraculous effect.
One discussion states: All Yang-type carbuncles and ulcers presenting with swelling, pain, fever, and thirst.
Qingre Xiaodu San Composition: Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 5 fen); Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) (each 6 fen); Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 2 qian); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 fen). One dose of the above ingredients is chopped, decocted, and taken orally.
One discussion states: Fever, thirst, and sore throat caused by smallpox/rubella toxins.
Maimen Dong Yin Composition: Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, 4 fen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen); Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 3 fen); Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 5 fen). The above ingredients are chopped, decocted in water, and taken orally. Add Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 5 fen) if there is a sore throat.
One discussion states: Loss of voice after smallpox/rubella.
Formula: Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Baifuling (Poria, peeled), Hezirou (Myrobalani Fructus), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). The above ingredients are ground into powder. Mix half a spoonful with water in a bowl. Bind seven stalks of small bamboo and seven branches of Huangjing (Vitex trifolia var. simplicifolia) together, ignite them, and use the smoke/steam to fumigate the bowl's contents. Take before bedtime.
One discussion states: After smallpox/rubella heals, although scabs fall off, scars remain dark or uneven. Applying white honey to the lesions facilitates scab removal, prevents pockmarks, and eliminates foul odor.
One discussion states: After smallpox/rubella, gan erosion sores appear on the body and joints with non-drying pus. Take silkworm moth cocoons, fill them completely with crushed Baifan (Alumen), roast over charcoal until the alum juice dries, then remove and grind. Add a small amount of Shexiang (Moschus). Apply dry powder directly to the sores each time. If not treated early, ulceration becomes difficult to resolve.
Case: Smallpox toxin enters the eye forming a nebula (Yi). Grind Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum) into fine powder, decoct with Sheep Liver, mix, and take after meals.
Case: Nebula forms in the eyes after rubella. Patients with smallpox/rubella must avoid eating chicken or duck eggs, as this leads to blindness. The efficacy is immediate and reliable; caution is essential.
Boyun Dan Composition: Tufen (Lagopodis Faeces, preferably from Mugwort flowers), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Bajibli (Tribuli Fructus) (each 1 liang), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 1 liang). The above ingredients are ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 80 pills per dose after meals with warm water. Three times daily, until cured.
One discussion states: Residual toxins after smallpox/rubella causing eye nebula.
Tongming San Composition: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (equal parts); Gujingcao (Eriocauli Flos, double dose). The above ingredients are chopped into coarse powder, decocted in water, and taken orally. Add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) if the eyes are red and swollen. Add Muzei (Equiseti Herba) if the nebula is dense.
Secret Formula: Huangdan (Minii Oxidum), Qingfen (Calomelas) (each 1 qian). Grind into powder. Use a goose quill to insufflate into the nose. If the left eye is affected, insufflate into the right ear; if the right eye is affected, insufflate into the left ear. Insufflate three times a day, while concurrently taking Tongming San. Alternatively, grind male and female Binglang (Arecae Semen) in water and drink it; this is also effective.
Treatment: For white nebula caused by smallpox/rubella damaging the eyes, grind Qingguohe (Canarii Fructus Nuclear) in water and apply to the eye. The nebula disappears immediately.
One discussion states: Residual toxins located in the Spleen and Lung meridians cause coughing. Qingjin San (Clear Metal Powder) is suitable.
Qingjin San Composition: Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, medium grade), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, prepared with ginger, medium grade), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, superior grade), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix, superior grade), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, superior grade), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, superior grade), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (equal parts); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw, inferior grade). The above ingredients are chopped, decocted in water, and taken well after meals.
One discussion states: Cough in children after smallpox/rubella, whether occurring years later or recently. Failure to treat this properly results in lifelong illness.
Formula: BaiPi (Arsenite of Arsenic, 1 fen), Xionghuang (Realgar), Kufan (Alumen, calcined), Eguanshi (Psilomelane), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Hanshuishi (Natrii Sulfas, calcined) (each 1 qian). The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Make pills the size of mung beans using mung bean starch paste. Take three pills per dose before bedtime, washed down with well water. Avoid hot foods. No harm occurs within one night (Note: Refers to the acute toxicity requiring strict dosage control).
