The pustules are tender and fine, without distinct boundaries. They adhere together in a mass of redness. By the seventh day, if there is deficiency itching and collapse, dryness indicates certain absence of pus. The skin lacks luster, and the chest area is not spared (indicating density). The body is full of red-purple blisters; by the ninth day, the time of death can be predicted. The pustules swell but the skin does not; the eyes are open and the mouth is agape; both Yin and Yang pulses show no seam (no vitality); by the sixth day, the condition is futile. The face is densely covered with pustules; carefully observe the Yin and Yang pulses. If the Tian Ting (Forehead) lacks sufficient fluid/essence, this child will surely be damaged. The head and body color lack moisture/luster; the pus is green and foul-smelling beyond bearing; this indicates the exhaustion of Spleen Qi, and life will soon end.
At the initial stage, the sores adhere to the flesh; after eruption, the flesh becomes difficult to penetrate. Cold and heat symptoms are indistinguishable; within seven days, itching and collapse occur. The initial spots resemble the color of the liver; scorched, withered, black, and sunken lesions indicate damage. The meridians of Heart and Kidney are exhausted; this smallpox belongs to Fire centered in the middle. When the head and face spots first appear large, they instantly become sharp and elongated; seeing such morphology, one need not envy miraculous prescriptions (as they cannot save). By the fourteenth day, scabs should fall off, yet the pus remains dry; the child sleeps heavily and refuses food, dragging out days without survival. Eyes shine fiercely towards the Dipper (Shen Qi escaping externally), hands and feet shake randomly; if such a disease is encountered, life will perish shortly.
Pustules on the acupoints of the Five Meridians point upwards; squinting with indistinct swelling; even if antidotes are given, delaying treatment results in futility. Blackness seen on the tip of the tongue indicates Heart Meridian overcoming Lung Meridian. Skin red like rouge, lips red, and these three signs appearing together mean the child will die within half a month. The white part of the eye is red; the stomach rots first with yellow pus; scorched and cracked, desiring tea but unable to drink. Initially seeing spots like the moon in clouds, with faint cinnabar colors hidden in the clouds; after two or three days, the child's life cannot be saved. Yellow pus indicates no hope; extreme dryness with spreading redness on the feet; accompanied by gingival gangrene, diarrhea, and refusal to eat, life will end within half a month.
Umbilicus protrudes, limbs float/swell; eyes yellow, nose tip red; such abnormal colors indicate life cannot be retained for fifteen days. Carefully examine the carbuncles on the body: throat front and back, heart region, Yin/Yang areas, back of the brain, lips, tongue, neck, and yin regions. By the fourteenth day, scabs should fall, but pus sores prevent eating; lack of spirit and smell of dead snakes indicate certain death. Initial spots resembling liver color; needle-like seedlings connected in a row; dry redness indicates exhaustion of Water (Kidney Essence); nine out of ten lives cannot be extended. Eyes fixed, spirit confused with fever; phlegm in throat, knees and below icy cold; drinking fluids accompanied by diarrhea; life cannot be preserved in an instant. Blood spots floating on the tongue; throat sores causing unclear swallowing; skin red with pustules that do not rise; Heart Meridian overcoming Lung Meridian. This is a divine and true secret; those who learn it must be astute.
