1. Indicated for all conditions caused by wind-cold-dampness pathogenic factors. Symptoms include spasm and contracture of the hands and feet, soreness and pain in bone joints; men with pi accumulation (abdominal masses), women with xue jia (blood masses); and various pains in the waist and hypochondrium, tuberculous scrofula (cervical lymph node tuberculosis), stubborn tinea and chronic ulcers that have persisted for years; also for early-stage swelling and toxicity, and chancroidal lumps that have not yet ulcerated. These should be applied to the affected area. For abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysentery, and malaria, apply to the umbilicus; it is particularly effective for white dysentery with cold signs. For cough and asthma, nausea after catching cold, chest and diaphragm distension and stuffiness, sallow complexion, heart pain, qi pain, apply to the anterior chest. For strain injuries from carrying heavy loads and general body pain, apply to the posterior chest. For lumbar pain and hernia (xiao chang qi), apply below the umbilicus. This treatment is invariably effective.
Shenyi Gao (Miraculous Ointment): From General Fu's prescription.
Herbs: Mugwort Leaf (Ai Ye), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu - *Note: Text says Chuan Xiong*), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niu Xi), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Di Huang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qin Jiao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix Rubra (Gui Wei), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhi Ke), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng), Aleuritidis Fructus (Da Feng Zi), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Pinelliae Tuber (Ban Xia), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cang Zhu), Fritillariae Bulbus (Bei Mu), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xing Ren), Ampelopsis Radix (Bai Lian), Imperatae Rhizoma (Mao Gen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Chuan Wu), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rou Gui), Galangalis Rhizoma (Liang Jiang), Dipsaci Radix (Xu Duan), Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Wei Ling Xian), Schizonepetae Herba (Jing Jie), Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix (Gao Ben), Eugeniae Flos (Ding Xiang), Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jin Yin Hua), Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Ding Pi), Pogostemonis Herba (Huo Xiang), Carthami Flos (Hong Hua), Sinomenii Caulis (Qing Feng Teng), Linderae Radix (Wu Yao), Sappan Lignum (Su Mu), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen), Dictamni Cortex (Bai Xian Pi), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiang Can), Aconiti Radix (Cao Wu), Persicae Semen (Tao Ren), Eucommiae Cortex (Wu Jia Pi), Gardeniae Fructus (Shan Zhi Zi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen), Manis Squama (Chuan Shan Jia), Myricae Fructus (Wu Bei Zi), Dalbergiae Odoriferae Lignum (Jiang Zhen Xiang), Drynariae Rhizoma (Gu Sui Bu), Xanthii Fructus (Cang Er Tou), Bombyx Morsio (Chan Tui), Vespa Nidus (Feng Fang), Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Bie Jia), Scorpio (Quan Xie), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Bletillae Rhizoma (Bai Ji) (each 1 liang), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), Centipeda (Wu Gong) (21 pieces), Serpentis Skin (She Tui) (3 strips).
Preparation: Take branches from seven types of trees: peach, locust, elm, willow, paper mulberry, mulberry, and chinaberry. Use 21 branches of each type (7x3=21). Cut them into coarse slices. Soak the herbs in 17 jin of pure sesame oil. Soak for three nights in summer, five in spring, seven in autumn, and ten in winter. Then decoct until the herbs are dry and the oil turns black. Filter out the dregs using hemp cloth and store in porcelain vessels. Take an appropriate amount of pine rosin, melt it in a clean pot first, then remove. For every 2 jin of rosin, add 4 liang of medicated oil, stir evenly until the consistency is appropriate. Filter again into a water vat and pull/stretch repeatedly until the color resembles gold. The ointment is ready.
2. Indicated for invasion by wind-cold-dampness, falls, sprains, and contusions, and all types of pain. Apply to the affected area. For heart and abdominal pain, apply to the painful spot; for wheezing and cough, apply to the back; for diarrhea and dysentery, apply to the umbilicus; for headache and eye pain, apply to the Taiyang acupoint. It also treats all kinds of unnamed swellings and toxic sores, ding carbuncles, back carbuncles, boils, damp-toxic sores, and swollen ulcers. If applied at the very beginning when symptoms are felt, the swelling will dissipate. Even if pus has formed, it can drain pus, promote flesh growth, and relieve pain. The effect is excellent, too numerous to describe fully.
Shenmi Wanjing Gao (Mysterious Ten-Thousand-Gold Ointment):
Herbs: Aconiti Radix (Cao Wu), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang) (each 6 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Forsythiae Fructus (Lian Qiao), Bletillae Rhizoma (Bai Ji), Ampelopsis Radix (Bai Lian), Linderae Radix (Wu Yao), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guan Gui), Momordicae Semen (Mu Bie Zi) (each 8 qian), Willow, Poplar, Peach, Mulberry, Jujube branches (each 4 qian). Alternative formula: Add Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen) and Sophorae Tonkinensis Legumen (Zao Jiao) each 5 qian.
Preparation: Coarsely crush into powder. Soak in 2 jin of pure sesame oil overnight. Decoct over fire until the herbs turn scorched. Filter out the dregs using raw silk gauze. Return the oil to the pot and boil over moderate heat until "water drops form beads" (the oil forms beads when dropped in water). Then add 12 liang of refined Lead Minium (Huang Dan), which must be roasted beforehand, adding it gradually and evenly until water drops form beads that do not disperse. Finally, add 4 qian each of Frankincense (Ru Xiang) and Myrrh (Mo Yao) powders, stir evenly, and set aside.
Alternative: Add 3 qian of Styrax (Su He Xiang), named Wanying Zijin Gao (Ten-Thousand-Response Purple-Gold Ointment).
3. Indicated for injuries from beating, scalds, burns, and toxic sores. Whether ulcerated or not, if the flesh is injured but not necrotic, self-healing occurs upon application. If the flesh is already dead, it will slough off naturally. New flesh grows easily. Apply until the flesh color turns pale, ensuring toxins are completely expelled. It promotes flesh regeneration most rapidly. In cases of beating where the outer skin is intact but internal flesh is rotten, the outer skin shrinks and hardens due to internal drying, causing pain in surrounding healthy tissue, commonly known as "ding scab." This prevents pus and blood stasis from draining, leading to internal swelling and pain, making ulceration and healing difficult. Weak individuals often develop tetanus, which can be fatal. If there is blood stasis in the wound, use a sharp-edged porcelain shard to prick the affected area to release the stasis, then apply this medicine. The scab and dead flesh will slough off, and pus/dirt will discharge. The ulceration will be shallow, and during flesh regeneration, no scab will form, avoiding the pain of scab removal. The efficacy is remarkable.
Dang Gui Gao (Angelica Ointment):
Herbs: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui) (1 liang), Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang and Chao Di Huang, 1 liang each), Beeswax (Huang La) (1 liang), Sesame Oil (Ma You) (6 liang).
Preparation: First, decoct Dang Gui and Di Huang in the oil until black. Add wax and melt. Cool and stir evenly. The ointment is ready. Dang Gui, Di Huang, Sesame Oil, and Beeswax primarily promote flesh regeneration, relieve pain, nourish blood, and repair tendons, harmonizing well with new flesh growth. White beeswax is especially effective.
4. Indicated for various swellings, toxic sores, and other diseases, with miraculous effects.
Shenxiao Wanling Gao (Divine-Efficacy Ten-Thousand-Spirit Ointment):
Source: Secretly preserved formula by Chanzer Wujiong of Mount Wutai.
Herbs: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chi Shao), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Di Huang), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Di Huang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Du Huo - *Note: Text lists Du Huo separately*), Forsythiae Fructus (Lian Qiao), Gardeniae Fructus (Shan Zhi), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Liang Tou Jian - *Note: Liang Tou Jian usually refers to Lomariopsidis Rhizoma or similar, text lists as distinct herb*), Sophorae Tonkinensis Legumen (Zao Jiao), Platycodonis Radix (Jie Geng), Bletillae Rhizoma (Bai Ji), Ampelopsis Radix (Bai Lian), Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Hong Ya Da Ji), Myricae Fructus (Wu Bei Zi), Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (Shan Ci Gu), Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Tian Hua Fen), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guan Gui) (each 6 qian), Ricini Semen (Bi Ma Zi) (60 seeds), Momordicae Semen (Mu Bie Zi) (40 seeds), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xing Ren) (40 seeds), Crotonis Fructus (Ba Dou Rou) (40 pieces), Manis Squama (Chuan Shan Jia) (10 slices).
Preparation: Coarsely crush. Soak in 2 jin 4 liang of pure sesame oil and 4 liang of human hair. Soak for 3 days in spring/autumn, 2 days in summer, 5 days in winter. Place oil and herbs in an iron pot. Boil over moderate heat using thirty 1-cun long branches of locust and willow together until scorched. Filter through hemp cloth. Return oil to pot and boil until "water drops form beads." Pour into a bottle. Weigh exactly 2 jin of oil. Add 1 jin of Shandong Lead Minium (Huang Dan), 2 liang of pine rosin (Song Xiang), 2 liang of beeswax boiled in ginger juice, and 3 liang of tung oil. Boil until the consistency is neither too hard nor too soft. Cool down. Add 3 qian each of Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Myrrh (Mo Yao), Dragon's Blood (Xue Jie), Camellia Seed Cake (Hai Er Cha), Ferula Resina (A Wei), and Carbonized Grass Ash (Bai Cao Shuang), plus 5 fen or 1 qian of Moschus (She Xiang), 3 qian of Calomelas (Qing Fen), and 3 qian of Portulaca Oleracea Paste (Ma Chi Xian Gao). All ingredients must be finely powdered. Add these powders just as the medicated oil is finishing boiling; adding them too early may dissipate the medicinal qi. Boil further until it does not stick to the hand. Bury the ointment in soil for 3-4 days to remove fire toxicity. Store in porcelain bottles. Apply as needed. If the ointment is too soft, add Hangfen (Lead Carbonate) until it does not stick to the hand.
