Human life is rooted in Qi and Blood. Diseases do not occur without first damaging Qi and Blood. In the world, there are unmarried men and women who harbor excessive thoughts and worries, leading to consumptive disorders due to overthinking. Men may show signs of scattered spirit and complexion first, while women may experience amenorrhea first. Why does this happen? It is because sorrow and worry damage the Heart. When the Heart is damaged, blood flow becomes chaotic and exhausted. Consequently, the spirit scatters and menstruation ceases. Since Fire (Heart Fire) is diseased, it fails to nourish its offspring organ (Spleen Earth), resulting in poor appetite. As the Spleen weakens, Metal energy (Lung Qi) declines, causing coughing. Once coughing occurs, Water energy (Kidney Qi) is cut off, leading to dry limbs. Insufficient Water energy causes irritability, brittle hair, and flaccid tendons. The pathology transmits through the Five Zang organs, eventually forming a Lao syndrome (consumptive disease), which is extremely difficult to treat. Some mistakenly attribute this to Blood Heat and use cooling herbs to resolve it. However, they fail to realize that Blood flows when warm and coagulates when cold. Scanty menstruation progressing to obstruction, accompanied by vexation and pain in the extremities and bones, emaciation, tidal fever, and a slightly rapid pulse indicates Yin Deficiency with Blood Heat. Yang invades due to deficiency, and Yin Water fails to control Yang Fire; the fire forces the water to dry up. Treatment should nourish Yin and Blood, avoiding purgative or draining herbs.
Another discussion on treating women states that the foundation lies in Qi decline and Blood abundance. The Heart generates Blood, and the Liver stores Blood. When both Blood and Qi decline, it is due to Heart Qi deficiency, failing to generate Blood and failing to control Lung Metal, allowing Lung Qi to invade Liver Wood. Liver deficiency leads to an inability to store Blood, resulting in dryness and failure to nourish the meridians, causing irregular menstruation. This formula specifically tonifies Heart Yuan deficiency, suppresses excessive Lung Metal, harmonizes Ying and Wei, and nourishes Blood vessels, allowing the disease to heal spontaneously. It also treats excessive Blood and Qi, consumptive fever, hematemesis, epistaxis, cough with phlegm obstructing the chest, chest fullness, consumptive heat cough, and panting without sweat. Use Fuling Buxin Tang: Danggui (washed in wine), Chuanxiong, Baishao (stir-fried in wine), Huai Shudihuang, Chenpi, Banxia (soaked in water, sliced, stir-fried with ginger juice), Baifuling (peeled), Jiegeng (deveined), Zhike (de-seeded, bran-stir-fried), Qianhu (deveined, each 1 qian), Gange, Zisu (each 7 fen), Renshen, Muxiang (each 5 fen), Gancao (3 fen). Decoct one dose with fresh ginger and dates.
Another discussion addresses various deficiencies and damages in women, five labors and seven injuries, irregular menstruation, and emaciated limbs. This medicine specifically regulates menstruation, harmonizes blood vessels, tonifies consumptive disorders, supports primal Qi, strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, nourishes the Heart and Lungs, moistens the throat, clears the head and eyes, calms palpitations, stabilizes the spirit, eliminates bone-steaming fever, reduces tidal fever, stops panting and coughing, transforms phlegm, arrests night sweats, halts diarrhea, opens stagnant Qi, benefits the chest and diaphragm, treats abdominal pain, relieves thirst, disperses cold and heat, and removes body pain. It has remarkable effects. Ji Yin Zhibao Dan: Danggui (washed in wine), Baizhu (deveined, stir-fried, each 8 fen), Baishao (stir-fried in wine, 8 fen), Baifuling (peeled, 8 fen), Sheng Zhimu (de-hair), Beimu (de-core), Xiangfu (stir-fried with child's urine), Digupi, Maimendong (de-core), Chenpi (each 8 fen), Bohe, Chaihu, Gancao (each 3 fen). Decoct one dose with three slices of roasted ginger, take warm.
Another discussion covers spleen meridian bleeding, insomnia, fever, and night sweats in women. It may be caused by worry and thought damaging the Spleen, failing to control blood, leading to spontaneous bleeding; or forgetfulness, palpitations, and restlessness; or heart-spleen pain, lethargy, and poor appetite; or spleen damage from worry causing blood deficiency fever; or limb pain and irregular bowel movements; or irregular menstruation with afternoon internal heat; or scrofula and abscesses that fail to resolve or drain. Use Guipi Tang: Huangqi (stir-fried with honey water), Renshen, Baizhu (deveined, stir-fried), Baifuling (peeled), Danggui (washed in wine), Yuanzhi (soaked in licorice water, de-core), Suanzaoren (stir-fried), Longyanrou (each 1 qian), Muxiang, Gancao (roasted, each 5 fen). Decoct one dose with ginger and dates.
Jiawei Guipi Tang: Treats cases where blood stasis has been removed or spleen meridian bleeding occurs, with lower abdominal pain, insomnia, fever, and night sweats; or spleen damage failing to control blood; or heart-spleen pain, lethargy, and poor appetite; or spleen damage from worry causing blood deficiency fever; or limb swelling and pain, irregular bowel movements, or irregular menstruation with afternoon internal heat. Add Chaihu and Zhizi to the previous formula.
Another discussion addresses blood deficiency and fatigue in women, presenting with five-palm heat, limb pain, dizziness, palpitations, irritability, dry mouth and throat, fever, night sweats, reduced appetite, and lethargy. It also covers blood-heat conflict causing irregular menstruation, umbilical and abdominal distension and pain, and chills and fever resembling malaria. For unmarried girls with weak blood and Yin deficiency, disharmony of Ying and Wei, phlegm-fluids, tidal fever, and emaciation leading to bone-steaming consumption, use Xiaoyao San: Danggui, Baizhu (peeled, stir-fried), Baishao (stir-fried in wine), Baifuling (peeled), Chaihu, Gancao (roasted, each 1 qian). Decoct with a piece of roasted ginger and a little Bohe, take warm. Adding Mudanpi and Shanzhiren (stir-fried) creates Jiawei Xiaoyao San.
Another discussion addresses blood deficiency and fatigue, five-palm heat, fever with toothache worsening at dusk, and irregular menstruation. This is Spleen Blood deficiency; add Shengma for cure. If pain recurs due to anger, add Chuanxiong to the previous formula.
Another discussion addresses severe deficiency of Qi, Blood, Spleen, and Stomach in consumptive women, presenting with fever, phlegm-cough, severe panting, reckless movement of Ministerial Fire, muscle wasting, heavy limbs, night sweats, low spirit, loose stools, abdominal masses, malaria mother, jaundice, emaciation, and ineffectiveness of various medicines. Use Wuxian San: Nèn Huangqi (stir-fried with honey water), Shen (deveined), Baizhu (deveined, stir-fried), Danggui (washed in wine, each 2 qian), Gancao (roasted, 1 qian). Decoct one dose with five longans and seven lotus seeds, take warm. For heat, add Digupi and Zhimu. For cough, add Wuweizi and Sangbaipi. For phlegm, add Beimu and Banxia. For thirst, add Wuweizi and Maimendong. For hematemesis, add Shengdihuang, Xijiao, Xuanshen, and Maogen juice. For blood deficiency, add Shudihuang and Baishaoyao.
Another discussion addresses dual Qi and Blood deficiency, empty heat in the five centers, or frequent leukorrhea. Ancients said that women often have strong temperaments and feel dissatisfied, leading to inner agitation and the burning of Xianchi Fire upwards, making the five centers feel like hot charcoal. Use Shizhen Yinzi: Huaishanyao (1.5 qian), Duzhong (salt-stir-fried, 1 qian), Renshen (1 qian), Baizhu (deveined, 1 qian), Huai Shengdihuang (1 qian), Baifuling (peeled, wood removed, 7 fen), Danggui (1 qian), Chuanxiong (7 fen), Baishao (stir-fried in wine, 1 qian), Gancao (3 fen). Decoct with two jujubes and seven stalks of Centipeda, take on an empty stomach.
Another treatment targets Gallbladder and Liver meridian symptoms: alternating chills and fever, afternoon tidal fever, silence and lack of appetite, or anger, bitter taste, deafness, cough with fever, hypochondriac pain, leg fullness, difficulty turning, chest and hypochondrium stuffiness, diarrhea, or vomiting sour fluid. Use Xiao Chaihu Tang: Chaihu (2 qian), Huangqin (1.5 qian), Renshen (7 fen), Banxia (1 qian), Gancao (6 fen). Decoct one dose with ginger and dates.
Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang: Treats Wind-Heat in the Gallbladder and Liver meridians, swelling and pain around the ears, nodular pain, chills and afternoon fever, or irregular menstruation. This is Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Zhizi and Mudanpi.
Another discussion addresses Kidney deficiency fever with thirst, expectoration, dribbling urination, dizziness, blurred vision, dry throat and cracked lips, loose teeth, sore back and legs, spontaneous and night sweats, hematochezia, loss of voice, and water overflowing as phlegm. It is the holy medicine for these conditions and a divine agent for blood deficiency fever. Liuwei Wan: Huai Shengdi (homemade, 8 liang, steamed in wine until black), Shanzhuyu (wine-steamed, pitted), Ganshanyao (each 4 liang), Mudanpi, Baifuling (peeled), Zexie (each 3 liang). Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 3 qian per dose on an empty stomach with plain boiled water.
Another discussion addresses irregular or absent menstruation, consumptive hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematochezia, fever, cough, panting, night sweats, palpitations, and all types of deficiency consumptive diseases, including critical bone-steaming. This formula can also be taken as a decoction. Ziyin Dihuang Wan: Huai Shudihuang (soaked in ginger juice, baked dry, 4 liang), Huaishanyao (2 liang), Shanzhuyu (wine-steamed, pitted, 2 liang), Baifuling (peeled), Mudanpi, Zexie (peeled, each 3.5 liang), Tianmendong (de-core), Maimendong (de-core), Shengdihuang (washed in wine), Zhimu (de-hair, wine-stir-fried), Beimu (de-core), Danggui (washed in wine), Baishao (stir-fried in wine), Xiangfumì (steeped in child's urine, stir-fried, each 1 liang). Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 100 pills per dose on an empty stomach with light salt soup. For expectoration, take with ginger soup.
Another discussion addresses five labors and seven injuries in women, bone-steaming, five-palm heat, heart deficiency with fear, irregular menstruation (early or late, pale or purple), constant leukorrhea, red and white discharge due to fatigue, anger, or postpartum imbalance, upper and lower body pain at night, afternoon fatigue, sore back and legs, gastric discomfort, bloating, unclear dreams, and hidden masses in the Chong and Ren meridians. Long-term use is highly effective. Baifeng Dan: One true white silk-feathered black-bone rooster. First, mix 1 liang of Huangqi powder, 1 liang of Danggui powder, and 5 qian of Gancao powder with 7 he of rice flour, form into small pieces, and feed to the chicken for six or seven days. Then hang it to die without bleeding. Remove feathers and entrails. Dangguishen (washed in wine, 3 liang), Chuanxiong (2 liang), Baishao (stir-fried in wine, 3 liang), Huai Shengdihuang (washed in wine, 5 liang), Shanyao (3 liang), Lujiashuang (4 liang), Tianmendong (de-core, 1 liang), Renshen (2 liang), Danshen (washed, 2 liang), Shanzhuyu (wine-steamed, pitted, 2 liang), Mugua (1.5 liang), Huhuanglian (1 liang), Zhimu (de-hair, wine-stir-fried, 3 liang), Xiaohui (wine-stir-fried, 2 liang), Maimendong (de-core, 1 liang), Huainiuxi (deveined, washed in wine, 2 liang), Qinjiao (deveined, 2 liang), Yinchaihu (2 liang), Biejia (vinegar-roasted, 1 liang), Sheng Gancao (1 liang). Process all ingredients according to standard methods and grind evenly. Cut the chicken into small pieces and place them in a porcelain jar with two parts water, two parts good wine, and one part rice vinegar. Seal the jar mouth with persimmon lacquer paper. Place in a large pot and boil with mulberry wood fire for three days and nights. Take out, sun-dry by day and bake by night. When dry, soak in the liquid again, then dry again, until the liquid is exhausted. Grind into extremely fine powder, mix with refined honey and pound over a thousand times. Make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 100 pills per dose on an empty stomach with light salt soup.
A woman suffered from crying over her mother's death, resulting in hematemesis, cough, fever, night sweats, and amenorrhea. This was sadness damaging the Lungs. Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Jiegeng, Beimu, and Zhimu. Take Guipi Tang frequently, followed by Liuwei Wan.
A woman experienced intermittent fever, appearing by day and hiding by night, moving unpredictably, or occurring in fixed locations causing mouth and tongue sores. If starting from the feet, it is rootless fire. Use Shiquan Dabu Tang plus Maimendong and Wuweizi.
A woman suffered from consumptive cough with intermittent fever or chills and fever. Using clearing-heat herbs worsened the fever, causing night sweats, dry mouth, burning sensations in the feet, whole-body heat, confusion as if drunk, waking only after the heat subsided. Or afternoon fever lasting until morning. This is Yin Blood deficiency and weak Yang. Use Liuwei Wan material in the morning and Shiquan Dabu Tang in the evening. After more than a month, symptoms improved slightly. Additionally use Buzhong Yiqi Tang. She recovered after more than two months.
