Left Cun (Inch) Heart Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates headache, fever, vivid dreams, and fright; floating and slow pulse indicates abdominal coldness and deficiency of Stomach Qi (true Yuan deficiency); deep and rapid pulse indicates incoherent speech and tongue stiffness; deep and slow pulse indicates shortness of breath and inability to exert strength (mainly due to discontinuity of Qi mechanism).
Left Guan (Carpal) Liver Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates wind disease with muscle twitching; floating and slow pulse indicates cold injury with uncontrollable tearing; deep and rapid pulse indicates back sores and frequent anger; deep and slow pulse indicates insomnia and damage to the eyes.
Left Chi (Cubit) Kidney Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates consumptive fever and red urine; floating and slow pulse indicates swelling of the yin organs and turbid discharge; deep and rapid pulse indicates lower back pain and generation of red turbidity; deep and slow pulse indicates white turbidity and tinnitus due to Kidney deficiency.
Right Cun (Inch) Lung Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates wind-stroke with heat obstruction in the throat; floating and slow pulse indicates invasion by cold air and uncontrollable diarrhea; deep and rapid pulse indicates wind-phlegm and asthma; deep and slow pulse indicates weak Qi and stagnation of cold saliva.
Right Guan (Carpal) Spleen Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates bleeding gums and excessive sweating; floating and slow pulse indicates cold Qi in the Stomach, Qi deficiency, and abdominal distension; deep and rapid pulse indicates excess internal heat and bad breath; deep and slow pulse indicates abdominal fullness and hardness.
Right Chi (Cubit) Mingmen (Gate of Life) Region.
Floating and rapid pulse indicates seminal emission and heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner); floating and slow pulse indicates invasion by cold air and frequent turbid discharge; deep and rapid pulse indicates thirst and frequent urination; deep and slow pulse indicates deficiency-cold and frequent urination.
(The seven emotions: joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, and fright internally correspond to the Qi Kou pulse.)
Joy or anger damages the Heart, and the pulse must be deficient; excessive thought damages the Spleen, and the pulse is knotted and central; grief damages the Lungs, and the pulse must be choppy; anger damages the Liver, and the pulse becomes soggy; fear damages the Kidneys, and the pulse is deep; fright damages the Gallbladder, and the pulse is agitated and corresponding; a tight pulse is caused by grief affecting the Pericardium collateral. The Qi of the seven emotions arises from internal causes acting upon the Qi Kou pulse.
(The six exogenous pathogens: wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness, and fire externally correspond to the Ren Ying pulse.)
A tight pulse indicates cold damage, with the pathology fixed in the Kidneys; a deficient pulse indicates summer-heat damage, with the pathology pushing towards the Bao (Uterus/Pericardium); a choppy pulse is due to dryness damage, requiring observation of the Lungs; a fine and slow pulse indicates dampness damage, requiring observation of the Spleen; a floating pulse indicates wind damage, corresponding to the Liver region; a weak pulse indicates fire damage, to be discerned through the Heart. The combination of pulses for the six pathogens must be carefully examined to avoid mistaking cold syndromes for heat syndromes in treatment.
Mental labor and overthinking inevitably damage the Heart; one must carefully search within the deficient and choppy pulses. Labor that injures Yin and Yang damages the Kidney region; a sudden appearance of a tight pulse indicates mutual invasion. Indulgence in sexual activity damages the collaterals of the Heart; one should deliberate within the minute and choppy pulses. Extreme physical fatigue damages the Liver; searching under the fingers reveals a string-taut and weak pulse. Irregular eating and drinking definitely damage the Spleen; one should not lightly generalize. When hungry, the pulse is slow and string-taut, which requires separate discussion; if slippery and solid, it is undoubtedly due to overeating. Shouting and crying deplete Qi and thus damage Qi; this should be well remembered in the context of dry and weak pulses. If one can understand the non-internal and non-external causes, life and death, auspiciousness and misfortune, all depend on this.
