The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: "Why is it that only the human face can endure cold?" This is because the head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians. All Yin meridians reach only to the neck and nape before returning, whereas all Yang meridians ascend to the head. Specifically, the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian originates beside the nose, intersects at the root of the nose, enters the upper teeth, surrounds the lips, runs along the Jiache acupoint, ascends anterior to the ear, and passes through the Zhusanren acupoint. If the stomach meridian is invaded by wind-heat pathogenic factors, or if wind-heat takes advantage of deficiency, it may cause facial swelling; or the complexion of the face and nose may turn purple, accompanied by wind-stinging or urticaria (skin itching with wheals); or the face may feel hot or cold. Treatment should be based on the symptoms corresponding to the affected meridian.
First, regarding facial coldness: this is due to deficiency-cold of the Yangming meridian.
