Physicians discuss human beard, hair, and eyebrows. Although they all belong to the category of hair, they are governed by different Zang organs. Therefore, some people have white beards in old age, with both eyebrows and hair turning white; others have white hair but their beards and eyebrows remain unchanged. This is due to the bias in the Qi of the Zang organs. Generally speaking, hair belongs to the Heart (Shen), inheriting Fire Qi, thus growing upwards; the beard belongs to the Kidney (Shen), inheriting Water Qi, thus growing downwards; eyebrows belong to the Liver (Gan), thus growing on the sides. In men, Kidney Qi flows outward, manifesting upwards as the beard and downwards as the genitals (Shi). Thus, women and eunuchs lack genitals and consequently lack beards, while their eyebrows and hair are no different from men's, clearly indicating that the beard does not belong to the Heart.
Do women lack Beard growth because they lack Blood and Qi? Qibo stated: The life state of women today is characterized by an excess of Qi and a deficiency of Blood. The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) fail to nourish the lips and oral region, hence no beard grows.
Why do eunuchs specifically lose their beards? It is said: Eunuchs injure the Zong Jin (tendons of the reproductive organs), causing blood loss such that the skin cannot recover its nourishment, hence no beard grows. Tian Huan (individuals with congenital genital maldevelopment) have not suffered external injury, yet their beards do not grow. Why? It is said: Tian Huan individuals have insufficient innate endowment, and the Zong Jin fails to develop properly, hence no beard grows.

Five times fruit (Wubeizi) 1 jin. Select whole fruits, crush each one individually, remove insects and soil impurities. Sort into three sizes: coarse like soybeans, medium like red beans, small like mung beans. Place these three categories separately into a new iron pot, stir-fry until the color resembles chestnut shells. Wrap in a damp green cloth, press into cakes with feet, dry in the sun, and grind into fine powder. Store tightly sealed in tin jars to prevent air leakage. Set aside for use.
Red copper powder 0.5 jin. Wash away soil and impurities until the water runs clear, then dry. Place in an iron pot, stir-fry until very hot. Pour in a small half-bowl of sour vinegar, mix well to ensure thorough wetting, then stir-fry again. Repeat adding vinegar seven times. Grind into powder, sieve, and pack separately in cotton paper. Set aside for use.
White Alum (Baifan) 4 liang, ground into powder and packed separately; Green Vitriol (Zaofan) 4 liang, ground into powder and packed separately; Bletilla Rhizome (Baiji) 4 liang, sliced, baked dry, cut into fine powder, and packed in paper.
When dyeing the beard, measure the dosage according to the amount of beard. For example: Wubeizi 9 qian, Copper Powder 1.8 qian, Baifan, Baiji, and Zaofan each 0.9 qian, plus Table Salt 0.9 qian. Put all ingredients into a bowl and grind extremely finely. Place in a small copper spoon, mix with strong tea decoction to form a thin paste. Simmer slowly over charcoal fire, stirring constantly without stopping, until it becomes a thick paste. Prior to application, wash the beard and hair clean with soap water and let dry. Use a brush to apply the medicine while warm onto the beard and sideburns. Cover with oil paper, wrap tightly with a black cloth up to the crown of the head, undress, rest on the pillow, and sleep. By midnight, check if the medicine is drying; remove residual medicine by hand. If too dry, moisten with tea decoction before removing. At dawn, wash face, gently cleaning beard and sideburns. If black stains appear on the facial skin, rub with finger dipped in oil, then immediately wipe off oil traces with soft paper. After dyeing, apply a little sesame oil to moisturize. The result will be distinct black and white, looking attractive. Dye four times daily for the first month, then once every half-month thereafter. White hairs will never reappear.

Black Lead (Heiqian) 4 liang; Mercury (Gong) 2 qian.
First melt the lead, then add mercury. Allow it to solidify into leaf-like shapes, cast into coin shapes. Pierce with iron wire to make two or three strings. Set aside for use.
Take a large porcelain jar, pour in three bowls of good salt-free vinegar. Suspend the lead coins inside the jar above the vinegar, leaving a distance of two fingers from the vinegar surface. Add two pieces of Selaginella (Juanbai) and 4 qian of Duck-bill Chalcanthite (Yazui Danfan). Seal the jar mouth with a porcelain plate, then seal firmly with yellow mud. In summer, expose to sunlight for seven days; in winter, simmer over chaff fire for seven days. Remove, drill a hole at the bottom of the jar to discard the vinegar. Lift the plate, sweep down the sublimated frost, and store wrapped in fat leather. When using, wash beard and hair with warm water, keep them damp. Wrap finger with fat leather, pick up the medicine frost, and stick it onto the beard and hair. Naturally turns black to the root. Divine efficacy. Strictly avoid washing with scented soap.
