Discussion on Infant Torticollis (Gui Bei, Turtle Back). This condition arises when wind-pathogens invade the spine after birth and penetrate into the bone marrow, resulting in a deformity resembling a turtle's back. For both torticollis (Gui Bei) and pigeon chest (Gui Xiong), applying turtle urine to the joints can lead to spontaneous recovery. The method for obtaining turtle urine is as follows: cover the turtle with green lotus leaves and shine a mirror upon it; the urine will flow out naturally.
Gui Bei Wan (Turtle Back Pill)
Ingredients: Zhiqiao (Bupleuri Fructus, bran-fried), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-rhizome), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, de-rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed; each 3 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using wheat paste, sized like millet seeds. Administer 15–16 pills per dose, adjusted according to the child's age, taken after meals with rice soup. Additionally, moxa-heat the Feishu (BL13) acupoint.
Location: Xinshu (BL15) is located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the third thoracic vertebra. Geshu (BL17) is located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the fifth thoracic vertebra. Another point (implied Geshu or similar based on context, text says "at seventh vertebra...") is located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the seventh thoracic vertebra. Moxa three cones at each point. Use the middle interphalangeal joint of the child's middle finger as one cun. The moxa cone should be the size of a wheat grain. Moxa five cones per point for cure.
Another treatment for infant torticollis: When wind-pathogens invade the spine and penetrate the bone marrow after birth, causing torticollis, applying turtle urine to the joints will flatten the deformity.
Discussion on Drooling (Zhi Yi). This refers to saliva flowing out and ulcerating in the cheek area. Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen. Due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, saliva flows freely and cannot be controlled. The treatment principle should focus on warming the Spleen. It is suitable to administer Wen Pi Wan (Warm the Spleen Pill).
Wen Pi Wan (Warm the Spleen Pill)
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, fried with ginger juice, 1 liang), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 qian), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 2 qian), Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, fried, 5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, de-rhizome and fried, 1 liang), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, albedo removed, 5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using ginger juice and thin paste, sized like hemp seeds. Administer 20–30 pills per dose, swallowed with rice drink.
Discussion on Sunken Fontanelle (Xi Xian). This results from heat in the Zang-Fu organs, excessive thirst and drinking, leading to diarrhea and dysentery. Over time, Qi and Blood become deficient and fail to ascend to nourish the cranial bones, causing the fontanelle to appear sunken like a pit and unable to fill flat. It is suitable to use the skull of a yellow dog, roasted until charred and ground into powder, mixed with egg white and applied topically to close the fontanelle.
Discussion on Protruding Fontanelle (Xi Tian). This refers to swelling of the fontanelle. The Spleen governs muscles. Irregular feeding, excessive hunger or fullness, or exposure to heat or cold pathogens invading the Spleen, cause disharmony between the Zang and Fu organs. Pathogenic Qi rushes upward, causing distension and protrusion of the fontanelle, resembling a pile of objects, accompanied by short yellow hair and spontaneous sweating. If cold Qi rushes upward, the fontanelle feels tense and hard; if heat Qi rushes upward, it feels soft. Cold patterns are treated with warming methods, and heat patterns are treated with cooling methods. Dosage should be adjusted according to severity.
