Pediatric children suffering from various types of Gan sores (Gan ulcers, a category of chronic wasting diseases with ulcerative manifestations) are caused by internal Gan Qi (pathogenic factors associated with pediatric malnutrition and parasitic infestation), leading to the movement of parasites, and external invasion by Wind-toxicity. The internal and external pathogens interact, clashing with Blood and Qi at sites of erosion, resulting in disease onset. If the sores occur on the mouth, nose, or teeth, they initially appear small but gradually erode and enlarge. The rate of erosion varies; slow erosion is termed "Chang Gan" (Ordinary Gan), while rapid erosion is termed "Zou Ma Gan" (Running Horse Gan). Severe cases may lead to rotting of the nose and mouth and loss of teeth. If Gan sores occur on the body margins or limbs, they are simply called "Gan Chuang" (Gan Ulcers). If they occur on the genitalia, they are called "Xia Gan" (Lower Gan). These Gan sores typically present with little pain, only mild itching, yet they deepen and enlarge unnoticed. If not treated promptly, they can cause significant harm.
