Pediatric edema is categorized into two types. The first is Qi edema, caused by Spleen and Stomach deficiency leading to Qi attacking the abdomen. If abdominal distension is mistakenly treated with purgatives, deficient Qi rises and attaches to the Lung, flowing into the four limbs and face, resulting in swelling. This mechanism also applies to swelling caused by Gan Qi (nutritional deficiency syndrome). The second type is Water edema, caused by excessive thirst in the Upper Jiao and uncontrolled water intake. Due to Spleen and Stomach deficiency, water cannot be regulated; Kidney Water overacts on Spleen Earth, causing Earth to follow Water upward and attach to the Lung. Since the Lung governs the skin and the Spleen governs the four limbs, water flows through the limbs and skin, causing swelling. In severe cases, Kidney Water floods the Lung, causing severe asthma, which is difficult to treat.
