Pediatric patients presenting with yellowing of the entire body, skin, and face are suffering from Huang Bing (Yellow Disease). This condition arises from excessive nursing or care, overeating, which leads to heat accumulation in the Spleen and Stomach. The heat combats with grain qi (digestive energy), evaporating outward. In Five-Phase theory, the Spleen and Stomach correspond to Earth, whose color is yellow, and they govern the muscles; thus, this disease manifests. Moxibustion must strictly be avoided, as it will exacerbate the heat.
If the patient experiences body pain, stiffness in the back and shoulders, difficulty in urination and defecation, abdominal distension, generalized yellowing of the body, yellowing of the sclera and fingernails, urine resembling the color of house dust that stains clothes, this is classified as Dan Bing (Jaundice Disease). If accompanied by thirst, dysuria, abdominal fullness, and a deep, fine pulse, it is considered difficult to treat. Huang Bing is relatively mild, whereas Dan Bing is extremely severe.
Furthermore, infants presenting with deep yellow discoloration of the face and body since birth suffer from Tai Dan (Fetal Jaundice). This is caused by maternal visceral heat steaming the fetus. Classics state that all forms of Dan are heat syndromes, characterized by deep yellow coloration. Mild yellowing indicates Stomach Heat. If only the face is yellow with abdominal distension, accompanied by thirst and pica for eating soil, it is Pi Gan (Spleen Wasting Syndrome). These two conditions are discussed separately. The formulas for treating Huang Bing and Dan Bing follow.
