After three convulsions from fright, epilepsy (Xian Zheng) develops. The patient chews foam, the jaw is locked, and the eyes roll upward. One must clearly distinguish between Yin and Yang patterns and examine the complexion and pulse. Regardless of severity, it is fundamentally caused by Wind-Phlegm.
Ancient scholars have discussed epilepsy extensively. Generally, it arises from fright received in utero, or from hearing loud noises or experiencing sudden fright after birth. Since a child's Shen (Spirit) is still weak, fright causes the Spirit to lose its residence (in the Heart). When the residence is empty, Phlegm-fluids enter and cause confusion. Symptoms include dizziness and disorientation, pulling of the mouth and eyes, staring upward with fixed eyes, spasms and convulsions of the hands and feet, and rigidity of the back. Sometimes, during an attack, sounds resembling those of cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, or dogs are emitted, followed by stiff collapse, foaming at the mouth, and loss of consciousness. For this condition, it is generally due to the stagnation and knotting of Wind-Phlegm, clouding the Pericardium. It is appropriate to frequently administer formulas that dispel Wind and resolve Phlegm, regulate Qi, and calm Fright. Clinical observation must be detailed to avoid error.
Treatment should involve pushing San Guan (Three Passes), Liu Fu (Six Limbs), Fei Jing (Lung Meridian), tonifying Pi Tu (Spleen Earth), Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heaven's Gate into Tiger's Mouth), rubbing the elbow pit, digging the "Men" point, Jing Ning acupoint, Wo Feng acupoint, Yun Tian Xin (Moving Heavenly Heart), digging the five finger joints, dividing Yin and Yang, Yun Ba Gua (Moving Eight Trigrams), Chi Feng Yao Tou (Red Phoenix Shaking Head), An Xuan Cuo Mo (Pressing Strings and Rubbing), Wei Ling acupoint, rubbing the middle finger, digging Zong Jin (Total Tendon), and moxibustion on Kun Lun acupoint.
Although cough can be classified as cold or hot, continuous coughing is usually due to the Lung being affected by Wind-Cold. Eyelid edema, abundant phlegm, and rattling in the throat often result from playing in water while sweat is not yet dry.
Regarding cough, there is none that does not arise from a common cold. The Classic states: "Why does the Lung cause people to cough?" Qibo replied: "The skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung. If the skin and hair are first invaded by pathogenic factors, the pathogens follow this correspondence and injure the Lung, causing cough." Taking off clothes when the weather suddenly warms, encountering wind after sudden heat, or playing in water before sweat has dried leads to Wind-cold cough. Initially, the face is red, lips are crimson, breathing is coarse, and fever occurs; this is Wind-cold causing Phlegm obstruction and cough. If cough persists for a long time, body fluids are depleted, and the Lung Meridian becomes deficient. The Lung is the canopy of all viscera; its physiological characteristic is opening when lying down and closing when sitting upright. Therefore, breathlessness occurs when lying down, and relief is felt when sitting up. This is due to excessive use of methods that attack the Lung and descend Phlegm, named Deficient Cough (Xu Sou). At this stage, one should tonify the Spleen and benefit the Lung, utilizing the Qi of Earth to generate Metal (Lung), which will lead to spontaneous recovery.
Treatment should involve pushing San Guan, Liu Fu, Fei Jing (push upward 120 times), Tui Er Shan Men (Push Two Doors), Er Ren Shang Ma (Two People Mounting a Horse), Wu Zong (rotate six times and dig), frequently rubbing Fei Shu acupoint, digging the five finger joints, He Gu acupoint, Yun Ba Gua, frequently rubbing the base of the thumb, digging Jing Ning acupoint, Yong Quan acupoint, Tian Men Ru Hu Kou, Men. For Phlegm obstruction and wheezing, dig Dao Xiang acupoint, then dig Men again. For Phlegm knotting and obstruction, frequently move Ba Gua. For dry cough, clear Liu Fu. For Phlegm cough, clear Fei Jing, push Pi, clear Shen, move Ba Gua. For wheezing, dig Fei Jing Zou Qi and Si Heng Wen.
