Formula for treating fainting and suffocation caused by entering wells or tombs.
During the fifth and sixth months, there is latent cold qi (latent yin-cold energy accumulated in deep spaces) in wells and deep tombs. Entering these spaces causes severe oppression and can be fatal. If entry is necessary, first throw feathers from chickens, ducks, or other birds into the well or tomb until they reach the bottom; this indicates the absence of latent qi. If the feathers hover and do not sink, it indicates the presence of toxic vapors. Alternatively, place live domestic animals inside; if toxic, the animals will die. If entry is absolutely necessary, one should first use wine. If wine is unavailable, use several sheng (a unit of volume) of vinegar, sprinkle it around the edges of the well or tomb, wait for a short while, and then enter. If one feels oppressed by this qi, with breath becoming faint as if dying, take water from the well/tomb, splash it on the person's face, and have them drink it; also pour it over their head and body to revive them. If well/tomb water is unavailable, other water may be used.
Formula for treating self-hanging where death has not yet occurred.
When bystanders see someone hanging themselves, do not cut the rope immediately. Instead, place an object underneath so that one can reach the head, grasp the hair, lift the body slightly to loosen the rope. Have another person tightly block both ears to prevent air passage through the ear canals. Have another person insert a scallion leaf into the nostrils and blow to clear the airway. Have another person bite the heels of the deceased until they regain consciousness.
Another formula:
For treating self-hanging, do not cut the rope. If the rope breaks suddenly, the vital qi escapes instantly, leading to irreversible death. Slowly embrace the deceased and gently massage to gradually loosen the rope before untying it. If the chest remains warm, select a rooster or hen, remove wing feathers to prevent flight, and chase it around the house until it is exhausted and its comb turns black after a long period. Stop the chicken, quickly use a ruler-like object to pry open the deceased's mouth, cut off the chicken's comb to obtain blood, and drip it into the deceased's mouth until breathing resumes in the throat.
Formula for treating self-hanging.
Cover the deceased's mouth and nose with thick clothing or felt and press down. Have two people blow forcefully into both ears. The person can be revived within the time it takes to cook a meal.
Formula for treating poisoning by gold dust where life is not yet extinct.
If it is known that gold dust was ingested, administer one liang (approx. 37g) of mercury into the mouth, shaking it to ensure it enters the throat. Assist the deceased into a sitting position to allow the mercury to flow downward. The gold will dissolve into mud and pass out through the lower orifices shortly thereafter. The deceased will regain consciousness before the substance is expelled. This treatment may be repeated three times to achieve recovery.
