论曰∶凡服五石散,及钟乳诸石丹药等,既瘥节度,触动多端,发动虽殊,将摄相似。
比来人遇其证,专执而治之,或取定古法,则与本性有违,或取决庸医,则昧于时候,皆为

Commentary states: For those who have taken Wushi San (Five Minerals Powder) and other mineral drugs such as Zhongru Shi (Certainty Milk Stone), although the illness has subsided and medication has been regulated, there are numerous triggering factors. While the manifestations of onset vary, the methods of care and regulation are similar.
Recently, people encountering these syndromes have treated them rigidly. Some adhere strictly to ancient methods, which may contradict the patient's constitution; others rely on mediocre physicians, missing the appropriate timing. Both approaches lead to self-harm. Blaming the minerals is misguided; one must deeply reflect on the principles. Merely stating "bathing" does not explore the subtleties. Regulating cold and warmth to suit one's feelings requires self-assessment. The principle of adapting to circumstances is easily understood. Tao Hongjing said: In the past, someone took Hanshi San (Cold Food Powder) and followed ancient laws by pouring two hundred jars of cold water over their body, resulting in immediate rigidity and death. Another sought to induce sweating by placing fires in the four corners of a narrow room, leading to death shortly after. Regarding such care, is it not due to human error? Clinging to past events and old methods is excessive. Now, chapters are listed for selection and adoption of beneficial practices.
Those who take Hanshi San with proper regulation will recover within a month or twenty days. The ability to tolerate warmth but not cold indicates recovery. Those who lose regulation may suffer from splitting headaches due to warm food and medicine causing accumulation (Pi). Urgent purgation is required. If stubborn accumulations suddenly appear in the hands and feet due to prolonged heat exposure, wash immediately with cold water, drink hot clear wine, and eat cold food to stop. Alternatively, drinking cold clear wine also works.
If sores appear on the body with qi stagnation, swelling, pain, and immobility due to excessive labor, Xiangchi Yin (Fermented Soybean Decoction) is suitable.
Xiangchi (Three Sheng) Congbai (Green Onion White, a tiger's mouthful)
Boil these two ingredients in three Sheng of water for three boils and take. If symptoms persist, take up to three or four doses until they cease.
If lower back pain feels like breaking and eyes feel like popping out due to heat rushing to the Liver and Diaphragm while the Waist and Kidneys are extremely cold, Huanglian Yin (Coptis Decoction) is suitable.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, each 1 Liang) Weirui (Polygonati Rhizoma, 2 Liang)
Chop the three ingredients, boil in three Sheng of water to obtain one Sheng, remove dregs, add Puxiao (Mirabilite, 1 Liang), and take at once. Stop when mild diarrhea occurs.
If dizzy and feeling like falling due to thick clothing trapping heat, wash the head with cold water; recovery is swift.
If foot pain feels like breaking due to sitting in warm places, walk alone on a single bed and wash with cold water to stop.
If abdominal distension feels like bursting due to long-term sitting in heat, wearing warm clothes, and improper diet, eat cold food, wash with cold water, expose to wind for cooling, and recover quickly.
If heart pain feels like stabbing due to missed meals, missed bathing, clashing of cold and heat, qi stagnation blocking the chest, drink hot wine frequently according to tolerance. As the wine circulates and meridians open, wash with cold water and soak hands in cold water, applying to the painful area. Replace when warm. Recovery is swift. After recovery, quickly consume cold food; more is better. Among pains, heart pain is most urgent and requires rapid treatment.
If sudden onset causes whole-body heat like boiling water, qi stagnation with unconsciousness, occasional falls, locked jaw, and loss of awareness, treat by forcing hot wine down the throat. If unable to swallow, remove teeth and force wine in. If cold qi in the throat rejects the wine, continue forcing it. After half a day, when qi descends, the patient revives. If wine cannot enter, rescue is difficult.
If dysentery resembles cold invasion due to movement, diet, and drink triggering heat, remove clothes quickly, eat cold food, drink frozen beverages, and wash with cold water to recover.
If all joints ache due to thick bedding and warm clothing that is not removed, use a single bed, thin quilt, and single garment. Wash with cold water. Do not wear new clothes; wear old, dirty ones. Even in winter cold, keep hair loose to receive wind. Use cold stones to iron clothes. Do not tie belts. If acid and stifling sensations occur, bathe in cold water immediately. Do not endure pain out of fear of cold. Eat cold rice.
If trembling and aversion to cold, or fever resembling Warm Malaria, occur due to dietary irregularity, hunger, lack of bathing/exercise, and eating spoiled food, urgently eat full portions of cold food. Cold... [Text cuts off here in source, inferred continuation based on context: ...wash with cold water].
If aversion to food smells like dead matter due to warm food causing accumulation, urgently purge with Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction). If not purged, recovery is impossible.
If sore throat, nasal congestion, and clear runny nose occur due to warm clothing near fire, remove clothes quickly, seek coolness in the wind, and apply cold stones to the throat and nose. Washing is unnecessary.
If chest and hypochondrium are full with upward qi and vomiting due to hunger without eating and medicinal qi rushing up, wash with cold water and eat cold rice to stop.
If food is vomited immediately and restlessness persists due to accumulation, urgently purge with Gancao Yin (Licorice Decoction). Failure to purge endangers life.
Gancao Yin Method:
Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 2 Liang) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 Liang, soaked separately) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 Liang)
Chop the three ingredients, boil in three Sheng of water for two or three boils, remove dregs, and divide into doses. Stop when bowel movements occur.
If difficulty defecating and abdomen hard like a coiled snake occur due to long-term heat accumulation and dry feces, consume Su Mi Gao (Butter and Honey Paste) one to two Sheng to moisten the abdomen and promote evacuation. If ineffective, use Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Puxiao (Mirabilite) to purge.
If strangury occurs due to sitting in warm places or riding horses causing heat to enter the Bladder, eat cold food, wash with cold water, and apply cold stones to the abdomen. Recovery occurs within a day.
If chills and head shaking with inability to support oneself occur due to insufficient food, medicinal qi overflowing into skin and muscles, Five Zang organs losing control, and hundred vessels shaking against healthy qi, force hot wine to harmonize vessels, force cold food to settle organs, force walking to regulate joints, and force bathing to unblock stagnation. Recovery follows.
If urine is thick and frequent due to eating hot foods and meats, wash the abdomen with cold water and take Zhizi Tang (Gardenia Decoction).
Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, 2 Liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, added when decoction is ready) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 2 Liang)
Chop the four ingredients, boil in five Sheng of water to obtain two Sheng, divide into two warm doses. Recovery occurs with mild purgation.
If flatulence is uncontrollable due to failing to wash after heat exposure, washing with cold water cures it.
If involuntary defecation occurs due to heat entering the Stomach and Large Intestine losing control, cold washing cures it.
If eye pain feels like stabbing due to heat rushing to the Liver and rising to the eyes, eat cold food frequently and wash with warm urine in the morning. Recovery occurs within three days.
If tinnitus sounds like wind and discharge occurs due to excessive labor and unregulated sexual activity causing qi to rise to the ears, nourish with frequent diet and regulate sexual activity to recover.
If oral ulcers, stiff and dry tongue, and loss of taste occur due to insufficient grain qi and medicinal qi accumulating in the stomach tube, urgently make Chi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, 2 Sheng) Weirui (Polygonati Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, each 2 Liang) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, de-heartened) Xiaobo (Platycladi Cacumen, each 3 Liang)
Chop the five ingredients, boil in six Sheng of water to obtain two Sheng, divide into three warm doses. Taking all at once is better. Re-brew if necessary.
If joint stiffness prevents flexion and extension due to prolonged rest, lack of labor, stagnant medicinal qi invading sinews and blood, exert effort to generate warmth and wash with cold water to recover.
If Wind-Cold or Warm Malaria occurs due to heat exposure, treat with standard remedies without using hot medicines. These formulas break up accumulations and do not conflict with Hanshi San, so they can be used generally. For those taking Hanshi San who develop new illnesses after heat resolves, first treat with cold-regulating methods to avoid cold injury.
If alcohol intoxication persists, food cannot go down, alternating cold and heat occur, washing brings heat then cold, lasting days to months, insomnia, sorrow, anger, palpitations, confusion, and forgetfulness result from long-term heat exposure, irregular living, eating hot medicinal foods, internal heat clashing with medicine, and cold-heat struggle. Even following laws fails. Previously, Huangfu Shi took this powder and attempted suicide upon each flare-up. Relatives restrained him, forced him to eat and drink, and his heat gradually subsided. Even with cold/hot medicines at home, patients forget them during flares. Though usually intelligent, they become dull during flares, difficult to reason with. Many die from this. Thus, I recorded my elder brother Shi Yuan's emergency method: combine Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction) and take it. Profuse purgation leads to recovery.
If removing clothes causes cold and putting them on causes heat due to imbalance in dressing, dress slightly if cold, undress slightly if warm. Washing brings clear recovery. Avoiding necessary washing leads to disease.
If gums swell, lips rot, teeth loosen and hurt, and masseter locks due to sitting in heat, treat promptly. Open mouth facing wind to let cold air enter throat, rinse with cold water to recover.
If pulse is surging and solid, or absent/weak like a dying pulse, or fine, rapid, wiry, and fast, indicating various violations, no doctor fails to recognize this pulse. Heat excess causes wiry/fast pulse; accumulation causes surging/solid pulse; acute pain causes absent pulse. Generally, Hanshi San heat presents this way. If asymptomatic, it is not fatal. Strict regulation is key.
If stool is thick and frequent due to prolonged sitting and loss of regulation, it signals impending death. This is difficult to treat. Purge with the previous Dahuang, Huangqin, Zhizi, Mangxiao Decoction. One in ten might survive. This is a desperate measure; failure to act leads to death and regret.
If the patient is exhausted but pulse remains, it is because medicinal qi pervades the hundred vessels while true qi is exhausted. The medicinal qi continues moving, so the pulse is not absent; this is not vital qi. After death, the body remains warm like a living person's muscle, intestines rumble, color does not change, and death occurs after one or two nights.
If whole-body swelling prevents turning due to prolonged sitting, lack of exercise, and lack of alcohol consumption, medicinal qi stagnates in the skin and blood vessels are blocked. Drink alcohol, wash with cold water, and exercise lightly to recover. If unable to walk, have others support forced movement until joints are smooth. Do not overexert to avoid rebound heat; if heat rebounds, wash again.
If cold food cannot be digested due to long-term cold food intake and loss of taste, make Baijiu Mi (White Wine Porridge) with lots of butter, eat hot for one or two meals. If slightly stifled, consume frozen beverages to recover.
If lower body odor and rot occur due to sitting on hot mats, sit in cold water to recover.
If insomnia at night occurs due to insufficient food and internal heat, take Zhizi Tang Formula.
Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 Liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 Liang)
Chop the three ingredients, boil in five Sheng of water to obtain three Sheng, remove dregs, divide into three doses. Mild purgation occurs. Eat cold food frequently to achieve sleep naturally.
If vomiting and retching with throat injury and clear blood occur due to sleeping in warmth and eating hot food, drink cold water and apply cold stones to the throat to recover.
If drug eruption causes lying still and silence due to heat excess and insufficient food disrupting nature, give hot wine, cold wash, cold food, and light exercise to recover.
If limbs and face swell due to warm diet and lack of labor, separating medicine from healthy qi, drink hot/warm liquids, eat cold food, and exercise/bathe to recover.
If breath smells like hatching eggs due to warm clothing, or scrotum odors and rots due to sitting in heat, enter cold water or undress and bathe to recover.
If sudden blindness occurs due to too-warm diet and dwelling, undress, cold wash, and cool the body to recover quickly.
If flesh pain wanders like roaming wind due to heat exposure rather than wind-cold, cold wash and apply cold stones to recover.
If heart stifling and confusion occur after taking medicine due to warm medicine fighting the disease, induce severe vomiting. If vomiting fails, death ensues. If vomiting continues, eat/drink cold food to recover. If unconscious and jaw locked, remove teeth and force hot wine. If vomited out, repeat.
If excessive sleepiness occurs due to prolonged sitting in heat/stuffiness, cold wash and cold food cure it.
If skin is hard as stone and immobile due to hot food, warm sleeping causing accumulation, Five Zang blockage, and blood vessel obstruction, urgently purge with the previous Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction). Eat cold food, drink hot wine, and exercise to recover.
If arm and leg spasms and pain occur due to prolonged sitting/sleeping in warmth, lack of movement, and qi entering Lung, Spleen, and Stomach, frequently dip two cloth towels in cold water and apply. Replace when warm. Recovery occurs within three days.
If back and abdomen feel hot in patches like hand/cup/disk size, apply cold stones wherever needed.
If sores grow between toes due to warm shoes/socks, walk on cold ground and wash feet with cold water to recover.
For mouth heat, pain, and stifling:
Sheng Ji Zi (Raw Chicken Egg, 5 pieces)
Take all at once for immediate cure.
If alternating cold and heat last months, shouting with open mouth, eyes looking high, spirit disconnected, and pouring over 100 stones of water daily fails, it is due to inability to exercise, drinking cold wine, and eating warm food. Like an ice-person whose heart grows colder despite cold treatment, qi freezes. Heat ironing and hot soup melt ice and disperse qi, relieving the ice-person. Similarly, if drug heat gathers in the heart causing chills, give hot wine quickly. When cold resolves and qi flows, wine warms limbs and body. Then wash with three Dou of cold water for complete recovery.
If qi cuts off, unconsciousness, occasional falls, locked jaw, and unawareness require bystander rescue. Hot wine is essential. If unable to swallow, remove teeth and force hot wine. If rejected, continue forcing. Insert again if expelled.
