There is a notion that the urine of a pit viper (Fushé, 蝮蛇) touching one's shadow can cause illness. The presentation involves sudden severe pain in a specific area of the body, resembling pricking by thorns or insect stings, followed by the aggregation of small nodules resembling cornel seeds. The periphery is red, and the center has a white pus head like millet grains. This condition also causes rapid changes in the skin and flesh, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever. In severe cases, it spreads continuously across the waist, flanks, chest, and back.
Upon initial onset, grind rhinoceros horn (Xijiao, 犀角) with water and apply it topically to stop the toxicity. The treatment follows the method for Huodan (Fire Carbuncle, 火丹), or various single-herb prescriptions may be used.
When initially exposed to viper urine, before sores erupt, the symptoms resemble those of Shegong (Sheshui Nu, 射工/水弩). Shegong sores present as a single dark/black lesion, whereas viper sores appear urgently as clustered, painful eruptions; the pulse resembles that of minor rashes, which serves as a differentiating factor. However, this is not a fatal disease.
The morphology resembles the venom of the viper and is similar to Ju (Deep Abscess, 疽).
Prescription for treating Tinea, Scabies, and Malignant Sores:
Calculated Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银), Alum (Fanshi, 矾石), Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, 蛇床子), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (each 2 liang).
Pound and sieve the four ingredients. Mix with 7 he of lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month. Stir in the mercury ten thousand times until no mercury particles are visible and the ointment forms. Apply to sores and infantile scalp sores; it is effective.
Prescription for treating Wet Scabies:
Take large Swallow Nests (Huyanke, 胡燕窠), specifically the soil from the part where chicks are raised. Pound into powder. Wash and wipe the affected area with light salt water, then apply dry powder once daily.
Patients with Ehe Disease (Malignant Nodules, 恶核病) suddenly develop hard masses within the flesh, linked together like plum or apricot pits, small ones like bean grains. There is severe pain in the skin and flesh, wandering left and right within the body, accompanied by high fever and shivering aversion to cold. This resembles Chuanghen (Scar-like lesions, 疮痕), Luoli (Scrofula, 瘰疬), and Jiejin (Tendon Knots, 结筋). However, Chuanghen and Luoli typically arise from existing sores and are slow-progressing diseases without toxicity.
Ehe Disease arises abruptly, possesses toxicity, and if untreated, enters the abdomen, causing restlessness and death. This disease is common in the South, caused by contracting warm winds during wind-moon periods, which then clash with sudden cold in spring and summer, leading to qi stagnation forming this toxin.
It is suitable to take Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction, 五香连翘汤) and apply a thin paste of Adzuki Bean (Xiaodou, 赤小豆) externally to resolve the swelling. One may also boil Wuxiang Tang, remove the dregs, and frequently wash/soak the area. After resolution, apply Danshen Gao (Salvia Ointment, 丹参膏) to dissipate remaining nodules. If not fully resolved, reapply the Adzuki Bean paste.
Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction): Treats Epomai (Malignant Veins, 恶脉), Ehe, Luoli, and Qi-pain from wind-aggregated nodules.
Aucklandiae Radix (Qingmuxiang, 青木香) (2 liang), Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) (0.5 liang), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenshuixiang, 沉水香) (2 liang), Frankincense (Xunluxiang/Ruxiang, 薰陆香) (1 liang), Caryophylli Flos (Jishe Xiang/Dingxiang, 鸡舌香) (1 liang), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao, 连翘) (2 liang), Belamcandae Rhizoma (Shegan, 射干) (2 liang), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) (2 liang), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活) (2 liang), Taxilli Herba (Jisheng/Sangjisheng, 寄生) (2 liang), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (2 liang).
Bamboo Sap (Danzhuli, 淡竹沥) (2 sheng).
Chop the thirteen ingredients. Decoct in 9 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add Bamboo Sap, decoct further to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses.
Danshen Gao (Salvia Ointment): Treats Epomai, Ehe, Luoli, and swelling/pain from wind-aggregated nodules.
Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen, 丹参) (2 liang), Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Shuodi Gen, 蒴藋根) (2 liang), [Herb missing name] (Banliang, 半两 - *Note: Original text likely missing character*), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao, 秦艽) (1 liang), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, 独活) (1 liang), Rhododendri Mollis Flos (Zhi Zhu Hua, 踯躅花) (0.5 liang).
Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Shujiao, 蜀椒) (0.5 liang), Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji, 白芨) (1 liang), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝) (1 liang), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花) (1 liang), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Mufangji, 木防己) (1 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Wutou, 乌头) (1 liang).
Finely chop the twelve ingredients. Soak in 2 sheng of Vinegar (Ku Jiu, 苦酒) overnight (half a day in summer). Decoct rapidly if urgent. Add 4 sheng of lard. Simmer until vinegar evaporates completely, avoiding burning. Remove dregs. Apply ointment to lesions 5-6 times daily until healed.
Regarding Roumei Disease (Malignant Flesh Growths, 恶肉病): Sudden growth of fleshy protrusions resembling adzuki beans within the body. They grow after protruding and do not retract when pushed, resembling cow/horse milk or rooster combs. Untreated, they continue to grow spontaneously without pain or itching. This results from malignant wind invading the muscle and vessels during spring and winter.
Treatment requires taking Loulu Tang (Euphorbiae Humifusae Decoction, 漏芦汤) internally. Externally, cauterize with hot iron tools daily until charred and detached. After cauterization, apply Shengma Gao (Cimicifuga Ointment, 治升麻膏) until recovery over several days.
Prescription for treating Epomai (Malignant Veins, 恶脉病):
Suitable to take Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang and Zhuli Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction, 竹沥汤) to expel evil blood, apply Danshen Gao externally. Recovery occurs over time. Alternatively, apply White Rooster Droppings (Bai Xiong Ji Shi, 白雄鸡屎) topically.
