When flavors combine, they form toxicity, but this does not necessarily lead to immediate death or disease; harm typically manifests only after a prolonged period. It is lamentable that some observe no adverse effects from morning consumption until evening and conclude that medical texts are inaccurate.
Cang Gong (Chunyu Yi) stated: When flavors combine, they form toxicity; when toxicity combines, it becomes medicine. This does not necessarily cause immediate death or disease; harm usually appears only after long-term accumulation.
Jin juice (Juice of *Viola* species): Sweet in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. It treats horse poison sores. Apply the crushed juice externally for washing and take it internally. Jin refers to a vegetable.
Cang Gong replied to the Yellow Emperor: Consuming excessive amounts of soybeans causes heaviness in the body.
Dantian (Cinnabar): Also known as Zhenfen. It is produced by heating cinnabar to obtain mercury; the black smoke rising above is referred to as such.
Jinya (Gold Tooth): Also known as Huangshiya (Yellow Stone Tooth).
Shuyu (Dioscorea opposita): Also known as Tutugen or Maotugen.
Niuxi (Achyranthes bidentata): Also known as Niuchun.
Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza): Also known as Zhuma. It is named thus because patients with lower back pain who take it can rise and walk swiftly enough to chase horses.
Tianmingjing (Platycodon grandiflorus root or *Ligularia fischeri*): Also known as Tianjing or Tianwuqing.
Suanjiang (Physalis alkekengi): Also known as Ku .
Qie (Shepherd's purse): Also known as Luyinren; this name refers specifically to its root.
Shui (Water plant): A large water plant found in water bodies, also known as Maicai or Maye.
Xama (Toad): Also known as Qufu, Ku , or Choudao.
Peng : Also known as Damei.
Lishi (Grindstone): Also known as Modaoshi (Whetstone).
Mumeng (Peucedanum praeruptorum): Also known as Wangsun.
Sheli: Coarse moss found in water.
Mendong (Ophiopogon japonicus): Uses Yuanyi (moss growing on walls) as an adjuvant.
Fangkui (Bupleurum scorzonerifolium): Excessive consumption causes confusion and delirium resembling madness.
The Classics state: Diseases are treated internally with decoctions and regulated externally with acupuncture and moxibustion. Acupuncture requires instruction from a master to perform correctly, whereas moxibustion can be performed by laypersons. If one understands the classics through a teacher, acupuncture and moxibustion can be applied flexibly. If not instructed by a teacher, one should follow diagrams and textual descriptions carefully. In remote areas without diagrams or literacy, applying moxibustion directly to the affected area is also an effective method. However, one must avoid moxibustion on exposed areas such as the face, eyes, and limbs to prevent unsightly scars.
The Yellow Emperor said: Moxibustion not reaching a depth of three fen is considered futile. Explanation: This refers to making the base of the moxa cone wide enough to cover three fen. If reduced below this, it fails to cover the acupoint aperture and align with the meridians, preventing the fire qi from penetrating deeply. In Jiangdong and Lingnan regions, where the climate is humid and warm with less wind-cold, a depth of two fen is appropriate, down to one and a half fen at minimum, depending on the patient's body size. For infants, the size of the moxa cone should be adjusted intuitively.
Fire from eight specific types of wood harms muscles, blood, vessels, and bone marrow and should not be used for moxibustion. The best is fire from Yangsui (fire lens), followed by KT stone fire. On cloudy days, fire from locust wood (Huaimu) is preferred. Yangsui uses a crystal lens to focus sunlight to ignite fire. On cloudy days without sun, drilling locust wood generates fire. Currently, people are advised to avoid fire from these eight woods and instead use traditional household fire. Traditional fire is not obtained by immediate drilling but is sustained from various kindling and mixed woods, having lost its original harshness, making it safe. Applying massage ointment and bandaging to extend the heat, or using moxa stems to prolong the flame, are both good methods.
The *Xama Jing* states: Fire from pine wood makes wound roots difficult to heal; cypress wood causes excessive pus discharge; bamboo wood damages sinews and flesh with excessive moxa doses; orange wood damages skin and muscle; elm wood damages bones, leading to bone depletion with excessive doses; ziziphus wood sinks into vessels, causing vessel thickening with excessive doses; mulberry wood damages flesh; jujube wood damages marrow, leading to marrow depletion with excessive doses.
The *Huangdi Jing* lists eighteen acupoints where moxibustion is contraindicated, although the *Mingtang* does not prohibit them. These are recorded below:
Touwei (ST8): Contraindicated.
Chenguang (BL7): Contraindicated.
Naohu (DU17): Contraindicated.
Fengfu (DU16): Contraindicated.
Men (Unspecified point, likely related to head/neck): Contraindicated.
Ermen (TE21): Contraindicated if there is pus in the ear or recent trauma.
Renying (ST9): Contraindicated.
Sizhukong (TE23): Moxibustion may cause microphthalmia or blindness.
Chengqi (ST1): Contraindicated.
Jizhong (DU12): Contraindicated.
Ruzhong (RN17): Contraindicated.
Shimen (RN5): Contraindicated for women.
Qichong (ST30): Moxibustion may cause dyspnea.
Yuanxi (GB41): Moxibustion may cause swelling and ulceration.
Tianfu (LU3): Contraindicated.
Jingqu (LU8): Contraindicated.
Diwuhui (SP13): Contraindicated.
Futu (ST32): Contraindicated.
Cao Shi lists additional points where moxibustion is generally contraindicated unless pathology exists:
Yuzhen (GB15): Passage for voice. Contraindicated in health; if diseased, 50 moxa cones.
Weijiao: Located behind the eye at the hairline angle. Site of eye essence and spirit connection. Contraindicated; may cause blindness. This corresponds to Touwei.
Jingming (BL1): Named Langjing. Located in the depression near the inner canthus. Site of spirit light. Contraindicated in health; may cause blindness and redness. If diseased, 7-14 cones.
Shegen (Root of tongue): Behind Lianquan, above the hyoid bone. Site of voice regulation. Contraindicated in health; may cause speech impediment. If diseased, 7-14 cones.
Jiehoutu (Thyroid cartilage prominence): Site of organ nourishment and defense. Contraindicated in health; may cause hoarseness. If diseased, 7 cones.
Huma (Neck artery): Site of blood and qi circulation. Contraindicated in health; excessive moxa may cause uncontrolled bleeding. If diseased, 50 cones.
Tiantu (RN22): Pathway for vital essence. Contraindicated in health; may damage voice. If diseased, 50 cones.
Shenfu (Heart Palace): Corresponds to Jiweiu (CV15). Contraindicated in health; may cause shortness of breath and loss of spirit. If diseased, 100 cones.
Chenlan: Intersection of sinews and vessels. Contraindicated; may impair arm movement. If diseased, 100 cones.
Guanyuan (RN4): Repository of lower jiao yin-yang and ancestral qi. Contraindicated for healthy women; may affect fertility. If diseased, 100 cones.
Xuehai (SP10): Source of yin-yang qi. Contraindicated in health; may deplete yang in men and stop menstruation/fertility in women. If diseased, 50 cones.
Zutaiyin (Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian points): Contraindicated in health; similar effects to Xuehai. If diseased, 50 cones.
Qiuxu (GB40): Source of voice chamber. Contraindicated in health; may cause qi stagnation and aphonia. If diseased, 14 cones.
These twenty points are listed by Cao Shi as contraindicated in health. Healthy individuals should not undergo moxibustion merely for play or curiosity; it is reserved for unavoidable pathological conditions.
Teachers explain that acupoints have near and far applications. Head diseases are treated with head points; limb diseases with limb points. This is the "near method." The "far method" involves treating head diseases with arm/hand points and abdominal diseases with leg/foot points, or treating left-sided diseases with right-side points. This explains why some say "no disease means no moxibustion," referring to avoiding distant points on healthy tissue rather than prohibiting all moxibustion on healthy bodies.
For the abdomen and back, up to 500 cones may be used. For limbs, only enough to dispel wind-cold is needed, typically 7 to 49 cones, not exceeding the patient's age in years. Points like Juque and Jiweiu on the chest/abdomen should not exceed 49 cones. Use small cones made from bamboo sticks placed directly on the meridian. Excessive moxa on the chest/abdomen depletes heart-lung energy; excessive moxa on the head depletes spirit; excessive moxa on arms/legs depletes blood and qi, leading to emaciation and weakness.
Kemu Four Points: Located at the outer and inner aspects of the knee, specifically in the depressions beside Dubi (ST35), resembling monkey eyes.
Quchi Two Points: Located on the dorsum of the foot, below the tibia, at the wrist-flexion junction, opposite the big toe gap, in the depression between the two tendons anterior to the ankle.
Fengfu One Point: Below the nape hairline, entering the hair, in the central depression between the scapular bones.
