In the prescription for throat ailments designated as "Jin Yao" (Forbidden Medicine), Zhen Jin (True Forbidden Medicine) serves as the sovereign herb at a dosage of one qian, Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder) at two fen, Huashi (Talcum) and Puxiao (Mirabilite) each at four qian, Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome) at five qian, Xiongdan (Bear Bile), Bingpian (Borneol), Pengsha (Borax), and Rushi (Calcined Gypsum) each at three qian, Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) at one qian, and Bingpian (Borneol) at two qian and half. The efficacy of this medicine in treating throat disorders is beyond words.
**Zhen Jin Prescription**
Ingredients: Zhen Jin (1 qian), Huashi (4 fen), Puxiao (4 fen), Chuanlian (5 fen), Yueshi (Borax, 3 fen), Danning (Arisaema with Bear Bile, 3 fen), Xiongdan (Bear Bile, 3 fen), Rushi (2 fen), Zhuzhu (Pearl, 3 fen), Bingpian (Borneol, 2.5 li), Sheng Puhuang (Raw Cattail Pollen, 2 fen). Adding Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) enhances the effect. These herbs reduce swelling and toxicity, dispel wind-heat, open the throat to expel phlegm, and are specifically indicated for dental abscesses, sublingual swelling (referred to as HT She), double tongue, trismus, and other conditions.
Bohe (Mint Leaf) and Ercha (Arborvitae Seed) each at two fen, combined with Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) at one li, Gancao (Licorice Root) at half a fen, Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder), and Longgu (Fossilized Bones) at two li mixed evenly; Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica) at one and a half li. If swelling and pain are severe, increase the dosage accordingly. Keep Bingpian (Borneol) aside to add just before use. Blowing this powder into the mouth to treat kougan (oral ulcers) yields miraculous results.
**Eight-Ingredient Kougan Prescription**
Ingredients: Bohe (Mint Leaf, 2 fen), Ercha (Arborvitae Seed, 2 fen), Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 2 li), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica, 2 li; use 4 li if swollen), Zhi Huangbai (Processed Phellodendron Bark, 1 li), Zhuzhu (Pearl, half a fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, half a fen). Grind into an extremely fine powder, mix uniformly, and store in a bottle. Add a small amount of Bingpian (Borneol) immediately before use. This powder is specifically indicated for various types of kougan (oral ulcers), oral erosions, sore throat in both men and women, unilateral or bilateral ru'e (tonsillitis), trismus, sublingual swelling, and throat abscesses, taking immediate effect. Rinse the mouth with water, blow the powder into the affected area, and it is safe to swallow.
If the condition is in its initial stage with significant swelling and heat, use more Bohe (Mint Leaf) and Bingpian (Borneol) for their acrid-cool dispersing properties. If the affected area is not swollen and heat is mild, or if the pain is chronic, according to this base formula, increase the dosage of Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Ercha (Arborvitae Seed), and Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder), mixing them to form a purple powder for blowing. For zouma gan (noma gangrenosum), chuan ya ding du (toxic carbuncle penetrating teeth), initial onset of double tongue, or infantile fetal toxin-induced kougan, follow this base formula by adding Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder). For kougan occurring after smallpox/variolae, also add Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and double the dosage of Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder), while removing Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) and Longgu (Fossilized Bones); adjustments must be made based on the severity of the symptoms. Generally, for difficult-to-cure critical conditions and post-variolae stages, Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Zhuzhu Mo (Pearl Powder) are essential herbs; their addition ensures efficacy. Furthermore, adding a small amount of Rushi (Calcined Gypsum) and Zhusha (Cinnabar), along with increased Ercha (Arborvitae Seed), constitutes a sacred remedy for kougan; do not underestimate it.
