The administration of these substances will inevitably lead to dampness obscuring the clear orifices and excessive heat, resulting in coma and unconsciousness. The subsequent use of Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Realgar (Niuhuang), Zi Xue Dan (Purple Snow Pill), and Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) will draw the pathogenic factor into the Heart, leading to internal closure and death. Alas! Cold diseases, warm diseases, wind diseases, and damp diseases have different names; how can their treatments be the same? Since people have adopted diaphoresis (sweating therapy) as a panacea for all diseases, wind-warmth and damp-warmth have become incurable conditions. If no diaphoretic herbs are used at the onset, the patient's family will immediately harbor doubts. Damp diseases do not resolve quickly; after a slight delay, a new physician is consulted. This new physician will invariably claim that the initial treatment failed to release the exterior. In an attempt to urgently release the exterior, it may already be too late. After releasing the exterior, the condition worsens critically, becoming irrecoverable. Yet, blame is still placed on the previous physician for not releasing the exterior promptly, and for the rash failing to emerge rapidly. The patient's family firmly believes this. They curse the previous physician with hatred and regret not having engaged the later physician earlier for dispersal therapy, deeming the previous approach a misdiagnosis. Consequently, future patients dare not engage the previous physician again, blindly following the dispersal methods of the new physician, even if several deaths occur without realization. Thus, one kills without others knowing, gains fame through killing, and reaps greater profits. Even if one argues that the patient's family forced this outcome, can there truly be no Heavenly Dao (divine retribution)? One day, using this method to kill one's own family members will amount to suicide by the same means. Cause planted in the past yields fruit in the future. Do not falsely believe that medical error carries no guilt, allowing one to wield the knife recklessly.

In my past stay in Loudong, I witnessed many dying from illnesses treated with these drugs, and I secretly pitied them. This is why I wrote these bitter yet well-intentioned words. Now that I have come to the prefectural city, where famous physicians stand like forests, the situation may differ from what I previously saw, yet similar cases may still exist. Patient families must be aware of this. If they hear my words and observe silently, they can also see through these tricks. (Recorded by Juping at the end of autumn in the Jiyi year.)

There are also matters today that defy explanation. In Suzhou City, almost every illness is diagnosed as Yin deficiency, and no prescription is formulated without American Ginseng (Yangshen) and Dendrobium (Shihu). Even when the tongue coating is greasy and dirty, appetite is lost, and dampness obstructs the Middle Jiao, these cooling and moistening herbs are still administered. When the Spleen is trapped by dampness, manifesting as mental fatigue and gastric stagnation, it is mistaken for deficiency, and Ginseng (Renshen) is used to tonify. When chest and epigastric fullness and stifling sensation prevent eating, it is then attributed to "deficiency unable to tolerate tonification," leaving the physician helpless. Alas! For poor families suffering from this, abstaining from medication leads to recovery; whereas for wealthy households, nearly all fail to survive, remaining unaware of their error until death. Thus, physicians' courage grows bolder, and their medical hearts grow coarser. Without examining the patient, they already have a fixed formula in mind. It seems that being a resident of Suzhou precludes Yang deficiency, mandating a diagnosis of Yin deficiency instead. Is this not laughable? If such logic holds, pharmacies in Suzhou need not stock aromatic, drying, warming, heating, cooling, or cold-natured substances, and medical texts need not retain formulas for treating wind-cold, summerheat, dampness, dryness, or fire. Indeed, if this were true, why not simply post a Yin-nourishing prescription in every pharmacy for all patients to take, thereby avoiding the confusion and disturbance of consulting physicians and taking pulses? Sigh! The spread of erroneous doctrines has become a trend, driven by kalpa (cosmic disaster), beyond human power to reverse. My incessant admonitions aim only to awaken those not yet ensnared by this fate upon hearing my argument. How profound is the impact! American Ginseng and Dendrobium in Suzhou, though differing from Fermented Soybean (Douchi) and Soybean Sprouts (Doujuan) in Taicang, cause identical harm through misuse. Therefore, I list them together to warn the afflicted in both regions. (Recorded again by Juping in early summer of the Xinhai year.)
