*Nashii Bingyuan* (Chao Yuanfang's *General Treatise on the Causes and Manifestations of Diseases*) on the syndrome of deficiency and emaciation after pediatric diarrhea: The intestines and stomach are weak; upon exposure to wind-cold, diarrhea occurs. After the diarrhea ceases, the spleen and stomach remain weak, the qi of grain and food is still insufficient, and they cannot nourish the blood and qi, thus resulting in deficiency and emaciation.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Taiping Era) records: Pediatric patients suffering from chronic dysentery and emaciation do so because of irregular diet and milk intake, with pre-existing phlegm-heat or malnutrition qi in the zang-fu organs. The cold and heat in the intestines and stomach are unbalanced, transforming into dysentery. If it persists without healing, the spleen and stomach become weak, the qi of grain and food decreases, and the blood and qi fail to nourish the body, leading to emaciated muscles and body.
