Qianjin Fang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Whenever people ride horses, they may be contaminated with the foul odor of horse sweat. If one has not washed hands, changed clothes, or shoes, and then approaches an infant, it may cause the infant to suffer from "Ma Ke Wu" (a pediatric condition caused by the shock or toxic qi of horses). When infants suddenly see horses, are startled by horse neighing, or come into contact with horse tack and horse odors, all these can cause children to suffer from "Ma Ke Wu". Careful protection is required, especially for infants under one year of age.
Taiping Shenghui Fang records: When a person rides a horse to another's home and carries horse sweat on their body without having time for a bath, they must change their clothes. If changing clothes is not feasible, they should rest for a while until their breath and spirit settle before approaching the child. Otherwise, the child may contract "Ma Du Ke Wu" (pediatric condition caused by horse toxicity). Or, immediately after unloading the saddle, when the horse's odor has not dissipated, bringing items like saddles and bridles close to the child, causing the child to be startled by the sound of horse neighing, are all due to contracting "Ma Du Ke Wu". The symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, or white stool, separation of water and grain in the digestive tract, and in severe cases, death.
The method in Qianjin Fang for treating pediatric Ma Ke Wu (applicable to both Ma Ke Wu and Ren Ke Wu):
Make pills using rice flour, sized like soybeans. Rub them on the palms of the infant's hands, soles of the feet, the heart region, and above and below the umbilicus, rubbing back and forth. Chant the spell: "Master Mo, Mistress Mo, the child suffers from Ke Wu, starting with me; although Bian Que was skilled, spitting well is superior." After chanting, discard the pill on the road.
Another method in Qianjin Fang:
Place a knife horizontally on the stove. Undress the infant to expose the chest and abdomen (in Qianjin Yi Fang, the character "fa" is written as "bo"). Hold the knife towards the infant and spit into your mouth, then point the knife at the heart and abdomen while making the sound "fei fei" (pronounced "fei", describing the action of spitting), saying: "The bright sun rises in the east, turning away from yin towards yang. Ge Gong, Ge Gong, I do not know which Gong. The child comes but does not look, leaves without looking back, passing through conflict with the living. Dust on the beams is the dwelling of heavenly spirits; earth under the door is where ghosts pass. The great sword and rhino horn face the Kitchen God; fourteen spits cure Ke Wu and calm the child's fright. Spit 'fei fei', just like this fourteen times 'fei fei'. Each spit must be accompanied by pointing the knife and chanting. This should be repeated three times to complete. Using the Dou pill follows the same method, repeated five to six times. Take this pill and break it open to inspect; if there is hair inside, discard the pill on the road, and the Ma/Ren Ke Wu will be cured."
Jianyao Jizhong Fang treats pediatric Ma Du Ke Wu by burning horse tail hairs in front of the infant, allowing the infant to inhale the smoke, burning daily until recovery.
Another prescription in Taiping Shenghui Fang:
Scrape the foam from the corners of the horse's mouth and apply it to the infant's mouth; this is effective.
