(Applied to the condition of "Ji Bing")
*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao) on the syndrome of infants suffering from "Bei" (Ghostly Affliction): The reason infants suffer from this disease is that when a woman is pregnant, evil spirits guide the fetal qi in her womb, becoming jealous and suppressing other children, causing illness in them.
Pregnant women do not necessarily all cause this disease; it occurs only occasionally. This disease called "Bei" tends to present with slight diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, and dry, brittle hair and sideburns as its symptoms.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: "Bei" refers to little ghosts (pronounced 'qi'). It is appropriate to take Long Dan Tang (Gentian Decoction) (formula see section on Epilepsy). Whenever a woman previously had an infant who could not yet walk, and then becomes pregnant again, allowing the child to drink her milk will also induce this disease. It causes the child to become sallow and emaciated with prominent bones, hair loss, and high fever as symptoms. The current "Ji Bing" (Successive Disease) corresponds to these symptoms.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children): Infants with mild dysentery, abdominal distension, alternating chills and fever, and withered hair are said to have "Bei" disease (pronounced 'qi'), which is caused by infant ghostly afflictions. This is likely because the fetus in the mother's womb recognizes the older sibling through spiritual awareness and feels jealousy, rather than the mother intentionally harming the child. Because various spirits exist outside the pregnant woman's body, and infants have pure vision, they fear these spirits, leading to this affliction.
*Qian Jin Fang* treatment formula for "Bei".
Roast *Vespertilio superans* (Bat), heat it, chew it thoroughly, and feed it to the child.
*Qian Jin Fang* Bai Xian Pi Tang (White Bark Decoction) for treating young children with Ke Wu (Guest Hostility) complicated by excess.
*Bai Xian Pi* (Dictamni Cortex), *Da Huang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - roasted, each 1 liang), *Shao Yao* (Paeoniae Radix), *Fu Ling* (Poria), *Xi Xin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), *Gui Xin* (Cinnamomi Ramulus - each 18 zhu).
The above seven ingredients are crushed, boiled in 2 sheng of water until reduced to 9 he, and divided into three doses.
*Qian Jin Yi* (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): Horse eye (eyeball) treats infant "Bei"; the mother should carry it.
*Sheng Hui Fang* (Holy惠民 Formulas) treats infants struck by evil spirits where the complexion turns white and red, then changes to green. Like the color of drunkenness, so upon recurrence, the face becomes red. If blackish-green surrounds the mouth, it is incurable. If the disease signs are noticed late, death ensues.
If noticed early, the evil qi has not yet entered the zang-fu organs. If the child sucks milk slightly, one may administer this Gan Cao San (Licorice Powder) formula (same as the formula in the Guest Hostility section but with different dosages, and without bamboo sap decoction).
*Gan Cao* (Licorice Root - roasted until slightly reddish, cut), *Long Gu* (Fossilized Bones), *Chi Fu Ling* (Red Poria), *Mu Li* (Oyster Shell - calcined to powder), *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Gui Xin* (Cinnamon Twig Heart - each 1 fen), *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - half liang, cut, lightly fried).
The above medicines are pounded, finely sifted into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, with a small cup of water, add 7 slices of light bamboo leaves, decoct until reduced to 0.5 cup, strain, add 1 qian of white honey, boil once or twice more, and reduce according to the child's size. Take warm, 3-4 times daily.
*Sheng Hui Fang* treats infants struck by evil spirits complicated by excess. It is suitable to take Da Huang Wan (Rhubarb Pill).
*Chuan Da Huang* (Sichuan Rhubarb - cut, lightly fried), *Bai Xian Pi* (Dictamni Cortex), *Gan Cao* (Licorice Root - roasted until slightly reddish, cut, each half liang), *Xi Jiao* (Rhinoceros Horn - shaved), *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Chi Fu Ling* (Red Poria), *Chi Shao Yao* (Red Peony Root - each 1 fen).
The above medicines are pounded, coarsely sifted into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, with a small cup of water, decoct until reduced to 0.5 cup, strain, and adjust dosage according to the child's size, 3-4 times daily.
*Sheng Hui Fang* treats infants over ten months old whose mothers become pregnant again, causing the child to feel mentally dull and physically emaciated, named "Bei" disease. It is suitable to take Fu Yi San (Bat Powder).
Take *Fu Yi* (Bat), burn to ash, grind finely, mix with rice water to take half a qian, 4-5 times daily for effect. If roasted until fragrant and chewed, feeding it to the child is also effective. (*Qian Jin Fang* uses this formula to treat "Bei", and also treats "Ji Bing"; generally, these two diseases are similar.)
*Sheng Hui Fang* another formula.
*Dong Gua* (Winter Melon - sliced), *Zhu* (Bamboo - cut).
Each four liang, decoct in three sheng of water to make soup, let cool to warm temperature, use to bathe the child for effect. (*Qian Jin Fang* also uses this to treat "Bei".)
*Sheng Hui Fang* another formula.
*Long Dan* (Gentian Root - half liang, remove root head).
Decoct in one medium cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cup, strain, and gradually reduce dosage according to the child's size.
Zhang Huan's Hu Gu Dan (Tiger Bone Pill) formula treats "Bei" disease.
*Tiger Head Bone* (lightly roasted), *Gui Jiu* (Podophylli Fructus - remove hairs), *Cao Long Dan* (Herbal Gentian), *Gui Jian* (Cornus Branch - each 1 fen), *Hu Po* (Amber), *Bai Jiao Xiang* (White Copal Resin - each half liang).
The above ingredients are pounded, sifted into fine powder, mixed with refined honey into pills the size of millet seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, washed down with Frankincense Water, adjusting according to the child's size.
Ji Bing (Successive Disease). *Ben Cao* (Materia Medica) states that *Bolao Mao* (Tailorbird Hair) treats infant Ji Bing. Ji Bing refers to when a mother is pregnant while breastfeeding, the child falls ill like malaria or dysentery, and later others may sequentially develop abdominal swelling, recovering or relapsing. Proximity to others can also lead to sequential infection. People in the North do not recognize this disease; pregnant women take the hair and wear it.
