In Mr. Wang of Handong's *Jiabao* (Family Treasure), the generation and restriction relationships among the Five Zang Organs are discussed:
The Liver belongs to the East, corresponding to Wood in the Five Elements. Wood generates Fire, and Metal restricts Wood. Liver Qi is most prosperous during the three months of Spring. It can restrict Spleen Earth but declines in Autumn. Taking the Spleen as the "wife," the Liver is Yang, while the Spleen is Yin.
The Heart belongs to the South, corresponding to Fire. Fire generates Earth, and Water restricts Fire. Heart Qi is most prosperous during the three months of Summer. It can restrict Lung Metal but declines in Winter. The Spleen resides in the Central Palace, corresponding to Earth. Earth generates Metal, and Wood restricts Earth. Spleen Qi is most prosperous during the last month of each season (the four seasons' transition months), specifically eighteen days before and after the Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, and Start of Winter. Additionally, the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth lunar months are also times when Spleen Qi is prosperous. Spleen Earth can restrict Kidney Water.
The Lungs belong to the West, corresponding to Metal. Metal generates Water, and Fire restricts Metal. Lung Qi is most prosperous during the three months of Autumn, declines in Spring, and can restrict Liver Wood.
The Kidneys belong to the North, corresponding to Water. Water generates Wood, and Earth restricts Water. Kidney Qi is most prosperous during the three months of Winter, declines in Summer, and can restrict Heart Fire.
The text states that the Liver corresponds to Wood and the Lungs to Metal. Why does the Liver sink when encountering water, while the Lungs float? The Liver is said to be generated by Water (Water generates Wood) and operates through the Yin meridians, being shaded by Water and Earth; thus, it sinks upon encountering water. However, after being cooked, it returns to its original nature and floats. The Lungs correspond to Metal. Referring to their proximity to the Heart (or specific elemental interactions) and their operation through the Yang pathways, they are depleted by Fire. Upon encountering water, due to emptiness, they float. After being cooked, they return to their original nature and sink.
Mr. Mao discusses why a child's Heart should not suffer disease in Summer:
Prolonged diarrhea transforming into dysentery, with bloody stools, becomes difficult to manage. The body becomes emaciated, unable to walk or sit; this indicates Heart Qi exhaustion, accompanied by mouth ulcers. If such symptoms appear, it indeed corresponds to the Southern Fire influence. If the Heart is affected during this time, there is no need for further hesitation.
A child's Liver should not suffer disease in Spring:
The eyes frequently feel dry and gritty; the whole body feels like that of a drunk person. There is constant drowsiness and lying down; mental restlessness and irritability occur easily. The lips turn white, and the eyelids swell. Delirious speech is heard, which one wishes not to hear. This corresponds to the Eastern Spring climate; such illness is unfavorable in Spring.
A child's Spleen should not suffer disease in the transition months of the Four Seasons:
The face often appears yellow; the condition must not be ignored or allowed to spread. The physique deteriorates with alternating chills and fever; walking is difficult, and food intake is reduced. This illness is taboo during the seasonal transitions. Swelling connects across the insteps. Morning swelling of the genitalia indicates death is imminent.
A child's Lungs should not suffer disease in Autumn:
After walking, breathing is often rapid; abdominal distension resembles pregnancy. The neck is stiff, and wheezing occurs frequently; milk and food are refused or not taken into the mouth. Accumulations form empty Qi; frequent fright leads to the formation of masses. Encountering this syndrome in Autumn means life is unlikely to be saved.
A child's Kidneys should not suffer disease in Winter:
Phlegm and sweat appear intermittently; urination is frequent, and night terrors occur nightly. The entire body develops millet-sized scabies; hands and feet are cold as ice. Worm-like substances frequently emerge from the mouth; the complexion is black, and spirit is completely exhausted. This corresponds to the Northern Winter climate; contracting this in Winter damages the body.
