(Also known as White Dysentery)
*Chishibingyuan* (Source of Diseases) on the Syndrome of Cold Dysentery in Children: Children's intestines and stomachs are deficient. If they are exposed to cold due to inadequate clothing, or if their diet is damaged by cold foods, cold qi enters the intestines and stomach causing dysentery. The stool color is white; this is called Cold Dysentery. If the cold is severe, the stool will be green.
Wang Xiansheng of Handong, *Jiabao* (Family Treasure), regarding Diarrhea and Dysentery Syndromes and Formulas: Infants and children may be injured by wind in spring. Due to wearing warm clothes and then suddenly removing them, they are injured by wind-cold, which hides in the muscles. By summer, due to irregular diet and living conditions, and being attacked again by wind-cold entering the intestines and stomach, tenesmus occurs with dysentery. If cold qi is excessive, frequent defecation occurs. It is appropriate to administer Yuanhuang San (Yuan Yellow Powder) two to three doses, and Jin suo San (Golden Lock Powder) two to three doses. If dysentery is accompanied by tenesmus, and there is churning pain in the abdomen, belly, intestines, and stomach, then Xiongzhu San (Realgar Cinnabar Powder) two to three doses should be administered (all three formulas are seen in this section).
Zhang Huan notes: Children's spleen and stomach have been disharmonious for a long time. Food intake is not digested, and internal heat and cold are uneven. The pathogenic qi enters the intestinal space, transforming into dysentery. If cold qi struggles in the intestinal space, body fluids coagulate, resulting in white dysentery.
*Shibi Jing* (Stone Wall Classic), Song on the Thirty-Six Types of Internal White Dysentery:
1. During diarrhea, the child constantly desires water and wine; sweat shines on the face like pearls (In the forty-eight syndromes song, this line reads: Face slightly red, cheeks pale and shiny). Eyes are heavy and sleepy often (In the forty-eight syndromes song, this line reads: Eyes heavy and sleepy, much dryness and thirst); the inside of the abdomen feels as if injured by an object. Straining at the throat, the large intestine frequently hurts; no desire for food, face sallow. Hair is dry and brittle, eyes are blue-green, ears feel cool; if the complexion changes, death is certain within three days (If white dysentery turns black, the forty-eight syndromes song says: Changing color within three days leads to rectal prolapse).
This is caused by fright, cold damage, or toxic substances. If diarrhea persists for a long time, thirst develops, and severely, abdominal pain occurs, with a yellow face, or a face entirely blue-black, it is incurable. Treatment should focus on separating clear and turbid fluids, regulating qi, and stopping dysentery.
*Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* (Discussion on Infant and Child Physical Signs), Forty-Eight Syndromes, Song on White Dysentery is identical to the above, followed by: This syndrome must involve accumulation, thirst, watery diarrhea, chronic rectal prolapse, and weakness. Specifically, purgative methods should not be used; only provide medicines that resolve spleen dysentery. If it is a excess syndrome, mildly use purgatives, then harmonize qi afterwards.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* (Ge Hong's Emergency Handbook), Xu Wang Shenxiao Fang (Xu King's Miraculous Effect Formula): For a three-year-old suffering from cold dysentery.
