(Attached: Neonatal Inability to Defecate)
*Huiyan Guanzheng* records: After birth, infants may suffer from umbilical wind (wind syndrome affecting the navel region) and cuokou (contracted mouth). This is caused by the mother consuming foods with "toxic" properties (referring to those generating damp-heat or irritation), such as chicken, pork, alcohol, wheat flour, ginger, and vinegar, after conception. The heat enters the fetus, and the infant, nourished by maternal blood, suffers thereby. Consequently, upon birth, the abdomen becomes distended, and the umbilicus and kidney area swell. The treatment involves applying Douchi Gao (Fermented Soybean Paste) to the umbilicus (formula see in this category) and administering Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) (formula see in Wind Fever category). If the areas around the umbilicus turn cyanotic-black and cuokou occurs, death is inevitable, and medication is unnecessary. Douchi Gao (also known as Congxian Gao/Scallion Saliva Paste) applied below the umbilicus of a newborn treats urinary and fecal retention.
*Waitai Miyao* records: Liu's formula for treating neonatal urinary retention (*Taiping Shenghui Fang* also notes it treats failure to suckle milk, stating that administration leads to patent urination and ability to suckle).
Human Milk (4 he) Scallion White (1 cun long)
Mix the above two ingredients and decoct. Divide into four doses. Urination will become patent; the effect is miraculous.
*Yingru Shu* records a formula for infants under ten days old suffering from urinary retention.
Take Puhuang (Polygoni Pollen) one sheng, mix with water, and apply as a poultice over the Henggu (above the pubic symphysis). Urination will become patent immediately.
Douchi Gao from *Huiyan Guanzheng* (also known as Congxian Gao)
Black Soybeans (appropriate amount) River Snails (19 pieces) Scallions (one large bunch)
Mash the above ingredients thoroughly, blend with Banana Stem Juice, and apply below the umbilicus.
*Jishi Jiazhuang* records Fenmi Gao for treating infants aged three to five days with obstruction of zang-fu qi mechanism, and various ailments within sixty days.
Qingfen (Calomel) (1 qian)
Dissolve Qingfen with a small amount of honey and cooked water. Dip a tiny amount of the prepared powder into the infant's mouth to induce one or two bowel movements. Do not administer again.
*Qianjin Fang* states: Six or seven days after birth, the infant's qi and blood consolidate to form flesh, resulting in a clean interior of the mouth, tongue, throat, and cheeks. If there are lesions in the throat or on the tongue resembling water held in a bamboo husk, this condition is named Xuan Yong (Hanging Abscess). If there is swelling, wrap a long needle with silk, exposing only a tip size of a millet grain, and puncture it to release qi and drain green, yellow, or red bloody fluid. After one puncture, observe the condition. If not resolved after one day, puncture again the next day. It will resolve completely within no more than three punctures. Minor residual swelling will also resolve after three punctures naturally. Lesions located under the tongue are named Chong She (Double Tongue). Lesions located in the inner cheeks and upper palate are named Chong E (Double Palate). Lesions located on the gums are named Chong Yin (Double Gingiva); all should be punctured to drain bloody fluid.
