The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Six or seven days after birth, an infant's qi and blood converge to form flesh, at which point the mouth, tongue, throat, and inner cheeks should remain clear. If there are foreign substances in the throat or on the tongue, resembling reed husks holding water, accompanied by swelling protruding into the cheeks and upper palate, this condition is termed *Chong E* (Double Palate/Soft Palate Hypertrophy). If the lesion is located on the gums, it is called *Chong Yin* (Double Gums/Gingival Hypertrophy); both require pricking with a needle to drain the blood.
Master Mao notes: Newborns may present with morphological signs of *Chong E* or *Chong She* (Double Tongue). *Chong E* refers to thickened tissue in the upper palate; *Chong She* refers to an additional layer of white tissue appearing on the tongue. Ulcers covering the entire mouth indicate Heart Heat. This syndrome arises from excessive heat and stagnation in the Heart organ. Treatment begins by applying Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Paste, see section on Fright and Accumulation) to the tongue, followed by administering Niuhuang Gao (Calculus Bovis Paste, see section on Diaphragm Heat) via breastfeeding or topical application on the nipple. Administer Niuhuang Gao three times daily; with such regulation, recovery occurs within two days.
Zhang Huan posits: Between six and seven days after birth, fetal toxins attack upward, preventing the convergence of qi and blood. Conditions such as *Chong E*, *Chong Yin*, and foreign bodies in the throat and tongue resembling reed husks holding water are termed *Chui Yong* (Drooping Abscess). In cases of Qi distension and swelling, urgently wrap a long needle with cotton, leaving only a millet-grain-sized blade exposed, to prick the area. This allows the infant's qi to escape and expels greenish-yellow bloody fluid. Cleanse with saline solution and immediately apply Rusheng San (Holy Sage Powder, identical to Niuhuang San in *Shenghui Fang*, see relevant section).
*Shenghui Fang* treats infantile *Chong E* and *Chong Yin* with swelling, pain, and salivation, recommending Niuhuang San (called Rusheng San by Zhang Huan).
Ingredients: Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Bailongnao), Cinnabar (Zhusha) (each 1 fen), Taoyin Yuanjingshi (Taoyin Crystal Stone) (1 liang), Qianshuang (Lead Frost) (0.5 liang).
Grind all ingredients finely into a powder. Each dose uses half a qian. First, puncture the swollen area with a bi-needle (Bi-zhen) to release blood, cleanse the mouth with saline, then sprinkle the powder into the mouth for miraculous effect.
Another prescription from *Shenghui Fang*:
Mix one he of donkey milk and one he of pig milk, boil until reduced to one he, and administer frequently to the infant.
Another prescription from *Shenghui Fang*:
Yuanmingfen (Mirabilite), Taoyin Yuanjingshi (each 1 fen), Qianshuang (0.5 fen).
Grind these ingredients finely and apply sparingly to the affected area.
*Wanquan Fang* records: When newborns have swelling in the mouth protruding into the cheeks and upper palate, it is called *Chong E*. When located on the gums, it is called *Chong Yin*; both require pricking to remove stagnant blood.
Application: Burn snake skin to ash, grind finely, and apply to the site.
Another prescription from *Wanquan Fang*:
Burn honeycombs found in fields to ash, grind finely, and apply.
Another prescription from *Wanquan Fang*:
Use Zaoxin Tu (Caosin/Cauline Soil), mix with water, and apply topically. (These three prescriptions are identical to those in *Shenghui Fang*.)
