According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Pathogenesis of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding the syndrome of Goose Mouth in infants: When a newborn infant has white flakes appearing in the mouth, extending to sores on the tongue resembling the inside of a goose's beak, this is called "Goose Mouth" (E Kou). This condition arises because, during gestation, the fetus received an excess of grain qi, causing heat from the Heart and Spleen to steam upward and manifest in the mouth.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: For any newborn suffering from Goose Mouth, there are white flakes like rice grains on the tongue; in severe cases, these may also appear outside the nostrils (some versions say "middle"). This is due to the infant receiving excessive grain qi while in the womb. It may also result from the mother consuming glutinous rice excessively during pregnancy.
Master Mao discusses: Newborns may present with three syndromes: Throat Bi (obstruction), Wood Tongue, and Goose Mouth. If a lump suddenly blocks the throat, it is called Throat Bi. If the body is highly feverish and the tongue is stiff and immobile, it is called Wood Tongue. If the mouth opens abnormally wide and the entire mouth is yellow like paste, it is called Goose Mouth. All three syndromes are caused by extreme heat generating wind, where strong wind stagnates heat toxins, resulting in solid accumulation of excess heat. For treatment, first administer a small amount of Zhishi Niuhuang Wan (Real-Heat Section) to promote unblocking; after vomiting out foul saliva, use Yunqi San (Stomach Qi Disharmony Section). However, administering Tianzhu Huang San (Real-Heat Section) combined with Niuhuang Gao (Diaphragm Heat Section) will lead to recovery. If hollow sounds like sawing are heard in the throat, the face appears cyanotic/black, and the infant refuses milk, this indicates a fatal prognosis. The *Ge Shi Zhou Hou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions by Ge Hong) for treating newborn Goose Mouth:
Take hair wrapped around a chopstick, dip it well-water (Jing Hua Shui - water drawn at dawn), and wipe the affected area. Repeat this every three days until the lesions fall off. If they do not detach, boil sorghum stalk juice until thick, wrap cotton around a chopstick, and wipe. In spring and summer when sorghum stalks are unavailable, sorghum bark can be used instead.
Method for using well-water (*Qian Jin Fang* refers to millet fungus; treatment methods are identical to Ge Shi's).
Later Xu Wang Shen Xiao Fang for treating infant Goose Mouth with Trismus:
Alumen (Fan Shi) Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, powdered. Each 0.5 fen)
Grind these two ingredients together until extremely fine, and apply thinly on the tongue. The medication is potent, so apply only a thin layer, three times daily. Wash the tongue with cold water and wipe away white debris with hair (The formula in *Wai Tai Mi Yao* is the same.)
*Qian Jin Fang* for treating infant Goose Mouth where the infant cannot suckle milk:
Drip juice from goose feces into the infant's mouth. (*Sheng Hui Fang* takes white goose feces and wrings out the juice with water.)
*Qian Jin Fang*, another formula:
Apply juice from broomcorn millet. (*Zi Mu Mi Lu* uses broomcorn millet juice.)
*Qian Jin Fang*, another formula:
Take the disordered hair of the infant's parents, wash it cleanly, wrap it around a peach branch, dip it in well-water, face east towards the sun, and use the hair to wipe the infant's mouth. Place the removed white milky debris into water, rinse seven times, and perform this for three consecutive days. (*Sheng Hui Fang* states: Wrap disordered hair around a finger, dip in warm water, and pick/wipe; do not stop for three days, and it will be effective.)
*Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang* for treating infant Goose Mouth:
Finely grind Natrii Sulfas (Ma Ya Xiao), sprinkle onto the tongue, three to five times daily. (*Sheng Hui Fang* states: Mix and apply under the tongue.)
*Zi Mu Mi Lu*: Formula for infant Goose Mouth:
Apply juice from Morus alba root bark (Sang Bai Pi) mixed with lead carbonate (Hu Fen) to the affected area.
*Zi Mu Mi Lu*: Formula for infant Goose Mouth refusing milk:
Burn chicken eggshell membrane (Ji Nei Jin/Huang Pi) to ash, mix with milk, and administer orally.
*Qian Jin Fang* for treating infant Goose Mouth:
Cleanly wash Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa root (Zhe Gen), finely cut five sheng. If roots are unavailable, bow wood is also suitable. Boil in one dou of water until reduced to two sheng, remove dregs, and further decoct to obtain five he. Frequently wipe the teeth and mouth until healed.
Zhang Huan: Within seven days after birth, if fetal toxicity manifests, white flakes like rice grains appear on the tongue connected to the tongue body, with a membrane the size of a pomegranate seed underneath, preventing speech and presenting as Goose Mouth. This is named Goose Mouth. Baoming San Formula:
Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, ground fine, levigated with water, dried) Alum (Bai Fan, burnt to ash. Each 1 fen) Natrii Sulfas (Ma Ya Xiao, half liang, finely ground)
Re-grind all ingredients together until fine. Take one zi dose each time. Take white goose feces, stir with water to extract juice, mix with medicine, and apply to the tongue, chin, and inner cheeks. Before applying medicine, first use a finger wrapped with disordered hair to wipe the debris off the tongue, then apply the medication.
*Kong Shi Jia Chuan* for treating infant Goose Mouth:
Use mulberry juice, apply with fresh cotton wadding. (Ri Hua Zi suggests grinding the east-facing root of the mulberry tree to extract juice.)
