《千金》论曰∶凡人无子,当为夫妻俱有五劳七伤,虚羸百病所致,故有绝嗣之殃。夫治之法,男服七子散;

(Exploring the Root) Regarding this category of discussions
The *Book of Songs* (Shijing), "Airs of Zhou Nan," states: "The peach tree is young and elegant, brilliant are its flowers." This praises the virtue of the queen. When the family is harmonious, women are happy to bear children. Wang's *Commentary on the Book of Songs* considers that "peach" can be used as medicine to enable one to have offspring. The *Erya* records: "Tu, Ma Xi." Ma Xi is Plantago seed (Cheqianzi).
In the *Suwen* (Basic Questions) chapter "Discussion on Ancient Innocence" of the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), the Yellow Emperor asked: Do people in old age without children because their physical strength and vitality are exhausted? Or is it due to destiny? Qibo replied: At fourteen years old, a girl's Tian Gui (substances promoting reproductive maturity) arrives, the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) becomes unobstructed, the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) flourishes, menstruation occurs regularly, thus she can conceive. ("Gui" refers to Ren Gui, belonging to Water in the North, and is the name of a vessel. The Ren and Chong vessels belong to the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. When Kidney Qi is fully abundant, the Chong and Ren vessels flow smoothly, menstrual blood gradually fills and flows down on time. The innate true Qi descends and engages with it, hence called "Tian Gui". However, the Chong vessel is the Sea of Blood, and the Ren vessel governs the uterus; they support each other, thus conception is possible. It is called "monthly affair" because the harmonious Qi typically manifests every thirty days; hence, delayed periods are considered pathological.)
At sixteen years old, a boy's Kidney Qi flourishes, Tian Gui arrives, essence overflows and is discharged, Yin and Yang harmonize, thus he can conceive. (Males and females possess different Yin-Yang constitutions, and the form of Tian Gui, manifesting as essence and blood, also differs. Yin is static; when the sea of blood is full, menstruation occurs. Yang is active; responding to union, essence is discharged. The two communicate and harmonize, thus conception is possible. The *I Ching* (Book of Changes), *Xi Ci* (Great Commentary), says: "When male and female combine their essence, all things are transformed," which refers to this.)
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) discusses: Those wishing to seek offspring should first know if the Five Elements of the husband's and wife's birth years generate each other, and if their virtues align. If the birth year is not in the states of Rest, Waste, Death, or Tomb, seeking offspring will surely succeed. If the Five Elements clash, or if Punishment, Killing, Clash, or Destruction occur, and the birth year is in Rest, Waste, Death, or Tomb, then seeking offspring is absolutely impossible; one must not entertain such thoughts. Even if obtained by chance, it will eventually burden others later. If the elements generate each other and auspicious stars are met, one must still follow the methods and prescriptions, avoiding various taboos. The son born will be perfect and beautiful, hard to describe fully. The methods for taboos include calculating the days of conception, such as the method for Wang Xiang (Kingly Phase) and Noble Constellation days, (all recorded in this section.)
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: People without offspring should consider that both husband and wife may suffer from the Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries, leading to weakness, emaciation, and myriad diseases, resulting in the calamity of ending the family line. The treatment method is for the man to take Qizi San (Seven Seeds Powder); for the woman, Zishimen Dongting Wan (Purple Stone Winter Sweet Pill) and Zuodao Dangpao Tang (Sitting Guide Uterus Cleansing Decoction). There will be no case of failing to conceive. (These four formulas are seen in this section.)
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: Ancients seeking offspring often used Qingyun San (Auspicious Cloud Powder) and Chengze Wan (Receiving Grace Pill). Modern people do not use them at all. Although not tested, the methods are valuable, so they are recorded. (These two formulas are seen in this section.)
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: When Yin and Yang harmonize, the two Qi interact, Yang applies and Yin transforms, thus pregnancy occurs. But if one eats excessively on the Three Yang days, daughters are mostly born. In the second month of pregnancy, it is called "Beginning Paste." Essence and Qi form in the uterus. By the third month, it is called "Beginning Fetus." Blood vessels do not yet flow; it changes according to form, having no fixed shape, transforming upon seeing objects. Thus, male and female are not yet distinguished. Therefore, before three months, one can use medicines and methods to change it to give birth to a boy. (Formulas and methods are seen in this section.)
The *Qianjin Fang* says: The method of intercourse should avoid Bing-Ding days (Fire days), as well as the days of First Quarter, Full Moon, Last Quarter, New Moon (Xian, Wang, Hui, Shuo), strong winds, heavy rain, dense fog, extreme cold, extreme heat, thunder and lightning, dark skies, solar/lunar eclipses, rainbows, and earthquakes. If intercourse violates these, it damages the spirit and is inauspicious, harming the man a hundredfold, causing disease in the woman. The child will inevitably be epileptic, idiotic, foolish, mute, deaf, crippled, blind, prone to illness, short-lived, unfilial, and unkind. One must also avoid intercourse under the sun, moon, stars, firelight, in temples or Buddhist shrines, near wells, stoves, latrines, tombs, corpses, or coffins. If intercourse follows the proper method, virtuous and wise beings will descend into the womb, making the temperament gentle and harmonious, actions successful, the family prosperous, and auspicious signs gathering. If not following the method, mean and foolish evil spirits will descend, making parents violent and unsuccessful, the family declining, and disasters frequent. The response of fortune and misfortune is like an echo and shadow; this is an inevitable principle, how can one not reflect deeply? To seek offspring, wait until one day, three days, or five days after the woman's menstruation ends. Choose a Wang Xiang day and a day when the moon resides in a noble constellation. Ejaculate during the vital Qi time, after midnight. The offspring will be male, long-lived, wise, and high-ranking. If ejaculating on the second, fourth, or sixth day after menstruation ends, the offspring will be female. After six days, do not ejaculate; you will not get a child, nor will the child survive.

If these coincide with the above Moon Residence Days, it is especially beneficial.
The *Qianjin Fang* Huangdi Miscellaneous Taboo Methods states: When angry, blood and Qi are unsettled; intercourse causes carbuncles and ulcers. Holding urine during intercourse causes strangury and penile pain. Loss of facial color, and intercourse after long travel and fatigue cause the Five Exhaustions and deficiency, leading to few children. Moreover, intercourse while menstruation has not ceased causes disease and vitiligo.
The *Taiping Shenghui Fang* (Holy惠民 Formulas of Taiping Era) states: Childlessness in couples has three causes. First, ancestral tomb Fengshui issues preventing succession; second, clashing birth years of husband and wife; third, husband's illness and wife's skin disease. These cause childlessness. For tomb or birth year issues, medicine cannot help. For husband's illness and wife's disease, medication is required and effective. Women with diseases causing childlessness are due to labor damaging blood and Qi, causing blood disorders, irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, or leukorrhea, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang Qi and abnormal menstrual flow. Palpating the right hand Guan-Hou Chi pulse floating indicates Yang; Yang pulse absence means childlessness. A faint and choppy pulse in middle age indicates barrenness. A Shaoyin pulse like floating-tight indicates barrenness. Aversion to cold with weak pulses in Cun, Guan, and Chi positions indicates barrenness.
The *Taiping Shenghui Fang* states: Female uterine deficiency-cold causing childlessness results from improper care, irregular diet, exposure to wind and cold, or excessive labor, allowing wind-cold Qi to invade the menstrual blood and knot in the uterus, cooling it, thus causing prolonged childlessness.

Chop eighteen ingredients. Boil with 5 sheng clear wine and 5 sheng water, reduce to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times daily and once at night. Interval between doses: three hours. Cover to induce slight sweating. If no sweat, use a hot stove in winter. Must expel accumulated blood and cold red pus resembling adzuki bean juice. Originally caused by evil matter in the uterus, or umbilical pain on cloudy days, or irregular menstruation due to cold blood preventing conception. If expelled adequately, and strength is weak/unbearable, continue taking; stop after 2-3 doses. If extremely distressed, eat a mouthful of sour rice and cold water to stop. Fear incomplete expulsion of evil matter reduces efficacy. Enduring the full dose is best. After one day, apply Dao Yao (suppository). (*Qianjin Yifang* omits Jiegeng and Gancao.)

Another version adds Tingli (Semen Lepidii/Descurainiae) and Pishuang (Arsenic Trioxide), each 0.5 liang. This medicine is used because Xiaoxiao Tang might not fully expel cold evil matter; the guide helps expel it. If weather is cold and no pain, guide is unnecessary. Salt guides exist but are inferior.
