According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding poisoning from decoctions in children and the symptoms of toxic qi causing vomiting and diarrhea: If decoctions are taken during spring and summer, due to the fragility and tenderness of children's gastrointestinal tracts, they cannot withstand the medicinal force, leading to incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The medicinal qi steams the zang-fu organs, causing irritability, restlessness, lethargy, and fatigue; this is termed poisoning, specifically toxic qi-induced vomiting and diarrhea.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats toxic qi-induced vomiting where the abdomen is not distended but nursing is impaired. Huoxiang Tang (Agastache Decoction):
Huoxiang (Agastache Herba, 1 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, 3 liang), Qingzhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 0.5 liang each).
The above four herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 2 sheng of water until reduced to 8 he, administered 1 he per dose, three times daily. If heat signs are present, add Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang).
*Wang Shi Shouji* (Hand Collection by Master Wang): A prescription to eliminate milk toxicity, ensuring breast milk is non-toxic for infants.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, sliced, 0.5 liang), Damaizi (Cannabis Seed, crushed, 1 he).
Soak the above two herbs in wine. Every morning, give the nursing mother one zhan to drink. Before nursing, squeeze out a small amount of milk, then allow the infant to feed. This also resolves milk toxicity in the infant.
(Regarding Diarrhea and Emaciation) Fifteen categories.
*Yangsheng Biyong* (Essentials for Health Preservation) discusses "Xiali" (lowering/diarrhea), stating: Ancients referred to any defecation or diarrhea as "Li". Ordinary watery diarrhea is called "Li". Undigested rice and grain is called "Migu Li" (Rice and Grain Diarrhea), or "Xiali Qinggu" (Diarrhea with clear/cold undigested food). Dysentery is called "Zhixia" (Stagnant Downward Flow), meaning the discharge is sticky and obstructed (dripping pus and blood, sitting on the toilet for a long time—does this not constitute stagnant downward flow?). There are four types of dysentery: Cold, Heat, Gan (Malnutrition), and Gu (Parasitic). (White discharge indicates Cold; red indicates Heat, often with tenesmus; mixed red and white indicates Gan dysentery; pure blood indicates Gu dysentery.) Treating according to symptoms is superior to modern reckless practices.
Master Mao discusses various diarrheas such as Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome), vomiting and diarrhea, accumulation diarrhea, fright diarrhea, Gan diarrhea, thirst diarrhea, injury diarrhea, cold diarrhea, and heat diarrhea. Their manifestations differ, and medications vary accordingly. For example, treating a case of diarrhea: if the eyes move slowly, sores appear in the mouth, nose and mouth are dry, diarrhea persists, black blood is passed, the fontanelle is sunken, feeding is impossible, and extreme thirst persists, these are signs of death and incurable. Additionally, if the pulses at the Three Passes are faint, faintly blue-black, or swollen and protruding, it is also fatal.
Qian Yi, in *Youyou Xinshu*, section on Critical Illness, states: The son of Huang Chengwu, aged two, suffered from diarrhea. Physicians attempted to stop it for over ten days. Symptoms included greenish-white stools, undigested milk, cool body temperature accompanied by "Geng Qi" (gurgling sound in throat), drowsiness, and physicians deemed the condition critical. Qian first administered Yipi San (Spleen-Benefiting Powder) three doses (see Section on Stomach Qi Disharmony) and Bufei San (Lung-Supplementing Powder) three doses (see Section on Cough and Asthma). After three days, the body warmed, and Geng Qi ceased. Then, Baibingzi (White Pill) was used to gently purge (see Section on Vomiting and Diarrhea), followed by two doses of Yipi San, stopping the diarrhea. Why? Diarrhea originates from Spleen deficiency and food injury. Initially, strong purging was avoided. After ten days, upper excess and lower deficiency arose; Spleen Qi weakened, affecting Lung Qi. By tonifying Spleen and Lung, the disease receded, body warmed, and Geng Qi stopped. Since there was food injury, purging was still necessary. Why not purge first then tonify? Answer: Green stool indicates lower coldness. Purging coldness first would cause severe deficiency. Thus, tonifying Spleen and Lung first stabilizes them; after purging, there is no further deficiency, followed by subsequent tonification.
Qian Yi's supplementary formula: For convulsive wind or diarrhea presenting with irritability and thirst, indicating internal consumption of fluids. Regardless of Yin or Yang patterns, decoct Qian's Baizhu San (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Powder) and allow the patient to drink to satisfaction. The more, the better. (See Section on Stomach Qi Disharmony).
*Yingtong Baojian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children) describes signs of death in Dongxie (Profuse Watery Diarrhea): Incessant profuse diarrhea, body heat with lethargy, relaxed eyes, loose slippery stools, and a sunken, immobile fontanelle.
*Yingtong Baojian*: During the weaning period, if the nursing mother is pregnant, her Qi and Blood may not nourish properly. If the infant drinks this milk, symptoms arise immediately: abdominal urgency with frequent diarrhea, heat in chest and back, night crying, emaciation, resembling accumulation disorders.
*Yingtong Baojian*: Infantile water-dysentery habit arises from being startled while drinking water, or drinking water before crying subsides.
Master Mao's Song on Death Signs in Various Infantile Diarrheas:
Profuse diarrhea should be hard to stop, body heat and lethargy prevail,
Eyes slack, stools loose and slippery, fontanelle sunken, distress evident.
*Qian Jin Fang* treats infantile dysentery with a large, firm abdomen.
Take old belt strips with much dirt, cut 1 sheng, boil in 3 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains. Divide into three doses.
*Qian Jin Fang* another prescription:
Rub the abdomen with white fish found in clothes. Also treats阴肿 (scrotal swelling).
*Qian Jin Fang* Siwu Liangmi Tang (Four-Grain Millet Decoction) for infantile profuse diarrhea:
Liangmi (Foxtail Millet), Daomi (Rice), Shumi (Broomcorn Millet) (each 3 sheng), La (Beeswax, size of a bullet).
Boil the four ingredients in 5 sheng of water. Boil Liangmi for three boils, strain. Use the liquid to boil Daomi for three boils, strain. Use the liquid to boil Shumi for three boils, strain. Add Beeswax to the liquid and mix. Drink when wax melts. Repeated trials show efficacy.
*Gujin Luyan* treats disharmony of cold and heat, or discharge with water, or red/white/green/yellow stools.
Use five sour pomegranate seeds, crush with shell to extract 2 sheng of juice. Take 5 he to 2 sheng per dose; complete cure upon finishing. For infants, administer 2-3 he according to discretion.
Taiyi Bureau Xianglian Wan (Costus and Coptis Pill) treats infantile disharmony of cold and heat, diarrhea with irritability and thirst, undigested food, abdominal pain and borborygmus, dysentery with pus and blood, tenesmus, frequent nocturnal urination, loss of appetite, muscle wasting, progressing to Gan syndrome.
Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens, lightly stir-fried), Baishizhi (White Halloysite), Baifan (Alumen, calcined until juices dry), Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, processed) (each 0.5 liang).
Pulverize the above herbs. Mix with vinegar and wheat paste to form pills the size of hemp seeds. One-year-old infants take 10 pills, washed down with millet drink, before meals. For irritability/thirst, wash down with Ginseng decoction. Adjust dosage based on age. Administer 3-4 times daily. *Shenghui* Longgu Wan formula is identical, also treating Dongxie.
*Tan Shi Shusheng* treats infantile diarrhea and dysentery.
Use Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix), slightly stir-fried and powdered. Take 1 qianbi per dose, mixed with aged millet drink.
*Yangsheng Biyong* divine prescription for adults, infants, elderly, and deficient persons suffering from diarrhea regardless of cold or heat.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens, cut like beans; if grains are large, wrap in new cloth and rub on stone to separate roots/stamens), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, cut like beans), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (each 3 liang).
Slowly stir-fry the three herbs in a pan until reddish. Remove, cool, and pulverize. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct in 1.5 zhan of water until 80-90% remains. Strain. Take 6 li of clear liquid, warm, on an empty stomach before meals, 3-4 times daily. Infants adjust dosage. If patients dislike bitter medicine, soak steamed dough balls, form pills the size of sesame seeds, then smaller like mung beans or yellow millet. Infants take 15-20 pills, washed down with warm millet drink. If made into powder, mix with boiling water or warm millet drink. Patients with diarrhea/dysentery must avoid raw/cold foods, meat/fish, and greasy foods; otherwise, treatment is ineffective.
*Yangsheng Biyong* treats dysentery and sliding diarrhea in the elderly and deficient persons, unresponsive to hundred prescriptions.
Chishizhi (Red Halloysite, genuine, separately ground), Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, powdered) (each 1 liang).
Mix with wheat paste to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take 20 pills, warm millet drink on empty stomach. If ineffective, increase to 30-50 pills. Infants take smaller pills. Genuine Chishizhi comes from Hedong/Shaanxi; current Qizhou output is peach-blossom stone, unsuitable for binding intestines.
Master Mao's San Sheng Wan (Three Saints Pill) for infantile diarrhea/dysentery:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each finely cut), Zhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (each 1 qian).
In a copper pot, stir-fry Huanglian until color changes, add Zhuyu and stir-fry together. When smoke rises, add Muxiang. Stir-fry all three briefly, remove, cool. Add 2 qian of Fan Hui (Alum Ash). Pulverize all. Form pills with vinegar and wheat paste. Size: Large. Take 10-15 pills, swallowed with scallion-rice drink.
Master Mao's Xianglian Wan (Costus and Coptis Pill) for infantile diarrhea/dysentery:
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried with 0.5 liang Zhuyu until smoking, remove Zhuyu), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus, processed, pitted) (each 0.5 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried with flour), Zhusha (Cinnabar) (each 1 qian).
Pulverize. Form pills with rice drink. Size: Large. Take 10-14 pills, swallowed with rice drink. Crush for small children.
Master Mao's Ruxiang San (Frankincense Powder) for all infantile diarrhea/dysentery:
Ruxiang (Frankincense Resin, 2 qian, roasted on lotus leaf over charcoal until half-melted, covered with bowl on ground, pounded separately), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Baijiang (White Ginger), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus) (above each 1 fen).
Finely cut the four herbs. Wrap in vinegar-flour paste. Roast in hot ashes until reddish. Remove paste, pulverize. Mix with Ruxiang powder. Take 0.5-1 qian, mixed with aged rice drink.
Master Mao's Xianglian San (Costus and Coptis Powder) for all infantile diarrhea/dysentery:
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, wrapped in wet paper, roasted), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Xiangdouzi (Quercus Fructus), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, remove heart and dust), Lianfang (Nelumbinis Calyx, shredded), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus, processed, pitted).
Pulverize equal parts. Take 1 zi or 0.5 qian, mixed with aged rice decoction.
*Yingru* Zhiqiao Tang (Immature Bitter Orange Decoction) for infantile irregular water diarrhea:
Zhiqiao (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, roasted, 4 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 8 fen), Jupi (Zelkova Bark), Fuling (Poria) (each 10 fen).
Cut. Boil in 4 sheng water until 1.2 sheng remains. Two-year-olds divide into four doses, adjusting as needed.
*Yingru* treats all diarrhea in infants/elderly progressing to Gan syndrome.
Bai Longgu (White Fossilized Bones), Baishizhi (White Halloysite) (each 5 fen), Jifenfan (Chicken Dropping Alum, stir-fried), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Hufen (Lead Carbonate, stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, roasted) (each 4 fen).
Pulverize. Form honey pills the size of sesame seeds. Take 15 pills with millet drink, twice daily. Increase to 20 pills for cure. Adjust for infants.
*Yingru* Huangzi Tang (Prince Decoction) for infantile profuse diarrhea lasting 3-4 days, adjusting water content:
Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Muli (Ostreae Concha, reddish) (each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Chishizhi (Red Halloysite) (each 3 fen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed) (each 2 fen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (5 fen).
