*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* records: When a newborn is just delivered, Zhusha Mi (Cinnabar Honey) should not be administered immediately. Take Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) the size of a middle finger joint, roast it until charred and crush it. Boil with one *he* (a traditional Chinese unit of volume) of water until reduced to one *he*. Dip a piece of silk floss into the decoction and apply small drops to the infant's mouth. Stop when approximately the volume of one clam shell has been applied. The infant will then vomit the noxious fluid from the chest, ensuring sound intellect and freedom from disease.
*Qian Jin Fang* records: After bathing and cutting the umbilical cord, and after dressing is complete, administer Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction). (The formula is the same as in *Ge Shi Zhou Hou*). Wrap a finger with silk floss, dip it into the medicine, and let the infant suckle. Stop when about one clam shell's worth enters the stomach; the infant should then experience a comfortable vomiting. If vomiting occurs, no further medication is needed. If vomiting does not occur, adjust the dosage accordingly. If the infant is hungry or thirsty, offer it again after a short while. If neither the initial dose nor subsequent doses induce vomiting, give it slowly in small amounts until the entire *he* is consumed. If the noxious fluid is expelled through vomiting, the infant's mind and spirit will be calm, and intellect will be healthy without disease.
*Qian Jin Fang* also states: If the infant does not vomit after consuming one *he* of Gancao Tang, it indicates that there is no residual evil blood in the body. Do not administer more Gancao Tang. Instead, Zhusha Mi (Cinnabar Honey) may still be given to settle the heart-mind and anchor the soul.
*Xiao Er Ji Yan Fang* states: Upon birth, every infant inevitably retains noxious fluid in the chest. If this is not eliminated promptly, it leads to stagnation and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, predisposing the infant to internal heat. Conditions such as fright convulsions, epilepsy, sores, and boils all arise from this. Therefore, within the first week of life, select several pieces of high-quality, plump Huanglian Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 黄连), crush them, and decoct a small amount strongly. Wrap the herb in silk floss shaped like a nipple, soak it in hot water to extract a yellow juice, and occasionally squeeze one or two drops into the infant's mouth. The noxious fluid will naturally descend, and milk and food will be digested well. Subsequently, Zhusha Mi (Cinnabar Honey) may be given intermittently. Treatment stops once the noxious fluid is expelled. Some methods use only empty silk floss wrapped around another herb, soaked in Huanglian to extract bitter juice for application.
*Bao Guan Zheng Lei Ben Cao*, citing Xiao Bing, notes: Administering juice from Jiu Gen Root Allii Tuberosi (Jiu Gen, 韭根) to a newborn induces the expulsion of noxious fluids, preventing disease.
*Ben Cao Shi Liao* records: For a newborn, crushing and administering juice from Jiu Gen Root Allii Tuberosi (Jiu Gen, 韭根) expels evil blood from the chest, ensuring lifelong health.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* records: After dressing the infant and administering raw Gancao Radix et Rhizoma (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草), soak a small amount of Jiu Zi Seed Allii Tuberosi (Jiu Zi, 韭子) in warm water. Apply the juice to the infant's lips. Reapply when dry, repeating ten or more times. Ensure the juice does not enter the mouth.
