According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) regarding the syndrome of internal heat, thirst, and excessive drinking in children after malaria: Patients with malaria suffer from summerheat contracted in summer, where heat resides in the skin. In autumn, this is constrained by wind pathogens, causing a struggle between Yin and Yang, resulting in alternating chills and fever, thus forming malaria. When malaria is about to resolve, sweating occurs; sweating leads to the depletion of body fluids. Additionally, heat generates within the Zang organs, making them deficient and dry. After the malaria subsides, the Fu and Zang organs are not yet harmonized, and body fluids have not recovered. Therefore, internal heat remains, causing thirst and a desire to drink. If drinking continues excessively and urination becomes difficult and scanty, it transforms into *Pi* (accumulation masses).
The song from *Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children) regarding thirst and abdominal masses in children after malaria:
Why does thirst persist after malaria resolves? It is due to the deficiency of the Zang and Fu organs; residual heat remains, prompting water intake, while masses form and reside in the abdomen.
*Sheng Hui Fang* (Prescriptions of Holy Grace) formula Wumei San (Mume Powder) for treating irregularly occurring malaria in children accompanied by frequent thirst and mental restlessness:
Wumei Mei Rou (Semen Pruni Mume, half tael, lightly stir-fried); Changshan (Radix Dichroae, one tael); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, three fen, honey-fried until slightly red, chopped).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve coarsely to make a powder. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water, adding seven leaves of Dan Zhuye (Herba Lophatheri) and thirty grains of Xiaomai (Frumentum Tritici) until reduced to five fen. Strain and take warm. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
*Sheng Hui Fang* formula Ganxi San (Dried Lacquer Powder) for treating seven- or eight-year-old children suffering from malaria with alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness, or thirst:
Ganxi (Resina Rhois Verniciferae, crushed and stir-fried until smoke emerges); Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, chopped and lightly stir-fried; each one fen); Changshan (Radix Dichroae); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one tael, ground); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, half tael, honey-fried until slightly red, chopped).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve coarsely to make a powder. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water and thirty grains of Xiaomai (Frumentum Tritici) until reduced to five fen. Strain, let cool to warm, and administer before the onset of malaria. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* regarding the syndrome of hardness in the hypochondrium after malaria in children: Malaria results from summerheat contracted in summer, residing in the skin, and being constrained by wind pathogens in autumn, causing a struggle between Yin and Yang, leading to chills and fever. During the peak of chills and fever struggle, heat attacks the Zang organs, causing dryness and thirst, leading to excessive drinking. Stagnant fluid forms *Pi* (accumulations), knotting under the hypochondrium. Thus, after recovery, hardness persists inside the hypochondrium.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve of the Master Ge) for treating six- or seven-year-old children with hard epigastric and abdominal masses, intermittent chills and fever resembling malaria. After taking Zi Wan (Purple Pill) for sixty days inducing vomiting and purging, if the mass remains hard, administer one dose of Jizi Tang (Egg White Decoction), expelling several sheng of foul matter, resulting in cure. This method is miraculous.
Gansui (Radix Kansui, seven zhu); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, five qian each).
Use two and a half sheng of water and one egg. Gently crack the egg, pour out the white into the water, stir well, blow away foam, and strain. Add the herbs and boil to obtain one sheng of liquid. Administer in divided doses according to the child's age and tolerance. The medicine is non-toxic and induces purging of the mass. If the mass is not fully expelled, repeat administration. For hard and numerous masses, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Xixin (Radix Asari), one tael each, for excellent effect.
*Ying Ru Shu* (Book for Infants and Toddlers) formula for treating prolonged, recurrent malaria in children with hard, hand-like masses under the hypochondrium:
Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa, stir-fried); Zhusha (Cinnabar, two fen each).
Grind into powder, mix with honey to form pills. For infants around two hundred days old, make pills the size of millet seeds; administer twice daily. Increase dosage slightly if ineffective.
*Ying Ru Shu* formula Zhimu Wan (Anemarrhenae Pill) for treating pediatric malaria with masses, hard and full accumulation diseases, clearing heat and directing Qi downward:
Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried); Changshan (Radix Dichroae; each one tael); Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, two liang, remove joints).
Grind into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take five pills per dose, three times daily. Continue until just before the next attack, completing three doses. Can also be taken on non-attack days. If Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) one tael is added, it can treat heat in the bones and restless sleep.
