Chao Shi Bing Yuan (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) on the Cold Malaria Syndrome: This arises from the intermingling of Yin and Yang. When Yang Qi is deficient, Yin prevails; when Yin prevails, cold manifests. Cold originates internally and merges externally, resulting in coldness both inside and out. Therefore, during an attack, there is merely shivering and trembling of the jaw and cheeks.
Quan Sheng Zhi Mi (Complete Life Guide to Enigma) discusses malaria in adults and children: If coldness rises from the back, feeling as large as a hand, with slight shivering, resembling a desire to fever but accompanied by sweating; or if headache and vomiting occur intermittently, with a slow and small pulse. This is due to inherent weakness of the Spleen and Stomach, where Qi becomes cold and gathers, preventing the digestion and transformation of water and grain, which transforms into phlegm. Latent phlegm resides internally, and Yin pathogen attacks Yang. Since Yang is overcome by Yin, coldness is forced, driving sweat out. It is appropriate to administer Xuanfu Hua Wan (Inula Flower Pill) and Banshu Wan (Pinellia-Sulfur Pill). (Formulas are found in this section.)
Sheng Hui Fang (Holy Benefit Formulary) treats persistent cold malaria in adults and children. Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) Formula:
