Mr. Mao: Children suffering from the syndrome of Zhong Gan Diarrhea (Middle-type Malnutrition with Diarrhea) present with emaciation and weakness throughout the body, abdominal distension, excessive thirst, and continuous loose stools. In ten bowel movements, three to five may vary in consistency, and worms may be present in the feces. This is caused by excessive accumulation of Gan malnutrition pathogens, leading to improper digestion of food in the abdomen. Treatment should first employ Qingjin Dan (Green Gold Pill), see Accumulation Section; Xianglian San (Cinnamon and Coptis Powder), see All Diarrhea Section; and Ruxiang San (Frankincense Powder), see All Diarrhea Section for regulation, after which recovery occurs. Regularly administer Baotong Wan (Child-Protecting Pill), see All Gan Sections.
The Song of Thirty-Six Types of Gan Diarrhea and Diarrheal Symptoms from *Shibi Jing* (Stone Wall Classic):
White lips, dry hair, and bluish forehead indicate definite accumulation and frequent fright. The abdomen protrudes high with masses like eggs; diarrhea resembles dregs with a yellowish hue. Do not use hot medicines to forcibly stop diarrhea; if stopped, sounds will arise in the intestines. When thirst strikes, fever suddenly appears; swelling from deficient wind is more alarming.
This condition arises from dietary indiscretion or improper feeding (Jiaoru), resulting in such symptoms. There are sheet-like masses in the abdomen, some the size of an egg, others like two or three dates. Hence diarrhea occurs, with feces resembling dregs; hair becomes stiff, complexion lacks luster, appearing blue-yellow; eyes often roll upward. One must distinguish water and grain metabolism; mild medicines harmonizing Qi will lead to recovery. If medicines are too hot, swelling ensues leading to death.
The song for this syndrome in *Fengsui Jing* (Phoenix Marrow Classic) is identical. A note states: It is suitable to administer Xingxing Wan (Awakening Pill), see this section; Yinbai San (Silver White Powder), see Cholera Section (*Yujue* agrees).
The song for forty-eight types of Gan and Diarrhea syndromes in *Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* (Discussion on Infant Forms and Syndromes) is identical. It further states: This syndrome results from overeating or fright, with white lips as a sign. If diarrhea does not cease and redness (heat signs) is present, hot medicines are contraindicated, nor is simple Qi-harmonizing appropriate. Instead, administer medicines treating fright and accumulation, followed by Chensha Wan (Cinnabar Pill) for Gan injury, see this section.
