According to the *Shenghui Fang* (Holy Benefit Formulary): The so-called pediatric Gan-li (childhood malnutrition with dysentery) arises from irregular breastfeeding and feeding, excessive intake of raw and cold foods, which damage the Spleen and Stomach. This leads to dysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs, where cold and heat pathogens contend with each other. With the weakness of the Large Intestine, water and grain cannot be gathered and transformed, resulting in dysentery. The clinical manifestations include sallow complexion, emaciation, night sweats accompanied by high fever, dry and brittle skin and hair, craving for sour and salty tastes, false distension of the heart and abdomen, passage of foul-smelling dysenteric stools, and irregularity day and night. Hence, it is named Gan-li.
The *Gongqi Fang* records treatment for Gan-li with emaciation. There is a song regarding "Maojiao" (dry and brittle hair):
Miscellaneous diseases in children evolve into Gan syndrome, regardless of whether the boy or girl is strong or weak.
The symptoms resemble changes along the spine, and like wasting disease, they cause lethargy and debility.
Neck heat, brittle hair, and oral-nasal Gan lesions;
Skin withers and limbs become paralyzed;
Green, yellow, red, and white dysentery occurs frequently;
Thick pus and nasal discharge resemble rice water sediment;
Dry eyes, sallow face, and red nostrils;
Anal sphincter opens and refuses to close;
Cracked lips, vomiting and reflux, refusal to nurse;
High fever alternating with aversion to cold, restless sleep.
Medication must use Qingdai San (Indigo Naturalis Powder); after administering to children with various ailments, efficacy can be observed.
Ri Hua Zi's prescription for pediatric Gan-li:
