The *Chushi Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) discusses the mountain malaria in adults and children: This disease originates in the Lingnan region, carrying the miasma of the mountains. Its presentation involves alternating chills and fever, with regular intervals of onset and remission. It is caused by exposure to the dampness and toxic vapors near stream sources and mountain ridges. The condition is more severe than malaria resulting from heatstroke.
The *Taiping Shenghui Fang* (Holy Prescriptions of Taiping Era) treats pediatric heat syndromes and malaria induced by miasma. Formula for Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder):
Xijiao (Horn of Rhinoceros, processed into chips) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly red, sliced) Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, sliced, lightly stir-fried) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, each half tael) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, one tael, coated with vinegar, fried until slightly yellow, remove membrane) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Changshan (Radix Dichroae)
