*Waitai Mi Yao* cites *Duan Ju* discussing the treatment of children who accidentally swallowed iron beads, the size of a civet cat's bean. After a year, it caused no harm, but later the child became emaciated and weak, food failed to nourish the flesh and muscles, and there were frequent episodes of dysentery or alternating chills and fever. Taking various medicines for self-treatment only worsened the condition without effect. A physician diagnosed: "This is due to the indigestion of the swallowed foreign body. According to standard methods, taking various medicines will not expel the swallowed object, so the illness will not resolve." Upon inquiry, the family observed that the child had been playing with sixteen iron beads in recent years and noticed one missing, suspecting ingestion, though they had not doubted this over the years. After the physician examined the child, he confirmed this was the cause of the illness and prescribed a decoction, after which the patient recovered. Subsequent treatment restored the child's flesh and skin to a plump and lustrous state. The formula was forgotten, but the case is recorded here.
In another household, a girl of about six or seven suffered from abdominal pain. Her mother massaged her abdomen and felt a horizontal object lying flat within the flesh. Asking the child, she wondered how a needle could be in the flesh. Surprised, they undressed the child to inspect; the skin was intact with no puncture marks. Pressing did not cause needle-like pain, only deep abdominal pain. The mother pressed firmly with her fingernails, causing the horizontal object to break into two pieces under her nails, without pain on either side. A physician was summoned to diagnose and examine together. If an infant had swallowed an iron thorn, there would typically be no sensation of obstruction. It is more likely that while nursing, the mother carried a needle against the child's body, piercing the skin. Although the child cried from pain, feeding and resting stopped the crying, leading to unconsciousness of the injury. Now, the pain during massage revealed it. Iron rusts and decays when exposed to wood and moisture; a needle inside human flesh, nourished by blood and qi over several years, also corrodes. Thus, it breaks when pressed, causing abdominal discomfort. Treating the abdominal pain with a warming middle-jiao decoction resolved the heart and abdominal pain. Later, the girl married and gave birth without any complications from the needle site, hence this record.
